Switching Traveler to Delta after Upgraded on Continental

First of all, I just want to say, I am not trying to scam or beat the system. I just do not know how to book a RT ticket to recieve Delta miles going and Continental returning. I really do not want to have to buy two separate one ways. I need 20k more mqm miles with Delta to retain my Platinum status for next year. I am Platinum with Continental. I buy first class going to Houston each Monday. I buy coach returning later in the week. All one ticket. I just got upgraded to first for the return. Can I now go to "Edit Traveler" and switch to Delta without losing my upgrade on the return?
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

You will lose your upgrade if you change to the DL FF number.

I don't think you can credit two segments of the same ticket to two different FFP's. Even if you changed the account number on the return, I've no clue if that would change both the outbound and the return. And if you got upgraded on the CO flight, you did not buy F...so you're paying a change fee to do anything to that ticket.

Changing the FF number would not constitute a change to the reservation that would implicate a change fee.

Why don't you credit the paid F outbound to DL and keep the comp upgrade on the return?

That would be perfect. How to I go about that?

I don't believe that is possible without losing your upgrade on the return.

If I buy 2 one way tickets, using the first class that I buy for DL and the returning coach for CO so that I can upgrade, will I cause myself headaches going through security? I know that in the past, buying one ways would set off a red flag with security.

If it's on one ticket sdm1130 is correct. If you've already been upgraded for the return when you take the outbound you would lose the upgrade. My suggestion would be to book it using your SM number and credit the outbound F segment to SM. On Tuesday go online or call the CO elite line and have it changed to your CO OP number. I am suggesting you wait until the next day because unlike DL's system CO doesn't post FF miles as soon as the BP is scanned. I ran into this issue a couple of times when doing MR's and crediting segments to multiple FFPs. If you change it the same day even if you've flown the segment(s) all segments flown that day will go to the last FFP in the PNR.

Buying a O/W ticket doesn't automatically flag you for SSSS. I've purchased many of them over the years. For some reason I suspect having status on CO makes a difference. You should be fine.

I have done it, not with Continental, but with other programs. The most convoluted itinerary that I had was LAX/JFK/VIE/MUC/ATL/LAX, which involved three programs. I should say at the outset that the trip was ticketed by a travel agent, though I don't see how that would make a difference. LAX/JFK was on AA for which I received AAdvantage miles and upgrade to business; JFK/VIE was on OS, the miles were credited to UA; MUC/ATL/LAX was on DL, I used miles to upgrade and the travel was credited to the SkyMiles program. The FF programs were attached to each segment.

OK, I just spoke with Continental and they said it was ok to change my FF to DL. He did it for me and I did not lose my upgrade. I will check the upgraded flight periodically to see if it changes.

Travel agents have the ability to assign FF#s by segment. I'm not sure if CO Shares has this functionality. If it does then I've never found an agent who was trained to use it.

Don't be surprised if it is downgraded. There are periodic sweeps done.

I will be watching for that. In the mean time, I am looking for a solid Plan B

When you get to Houston on Monday, call and try to get your Onepass number put back in for the return leg.

I tried that last week. It seems that CO takes about 48 hours before posting the miles. I changed it back to CO from DL on Tues last week as I was not yet upgraded for my thurs return. My miles posted on Weds and they all went to CO. That night I got upgraded.
