In my experience with long haul flights from EWR to HKG, PEK and NRT, the very good service is limited to business class. In economy class, the service is very much hit or miss. I like to sleep the entire flight so I have very few demands and I really see the onboard staff as underpaid, overworked and disgruntled. Even as a plat, I would never ask for anything extra sitting in economy. Actually, if you are a plat in economy then you are just another passenger. In my 75,000+ miles per year on Continental alone, I would never say that the service has ever rivaled anything I have experienced on Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines is in a class of its own. I tend to be a fan of Quantas when I used to do the NYC-CA-SYD leg alot. They have great customer service in business--at least at that time. Also, my limited experience with Korean Air in business has been very positive. In my opinion, customer service is almost dead--at least in the back.
