FT & Continental WeCare Holiday 2009 Donation Drive

Flyertalkers,

As I'm sure you all know, the airline industry is going through some tough times. In appreciation for the hard work that all the employees at Continental do to fly us to our destinations safely, we've created a donation website benefiting WeCare, Continental's employee assistance fund.

The WeCare Fund is a financial assistance program that helps Continental Airlines employees and their families by granting financial assistance. These funds are used to pay for basic necessities such as rent, clothing, medicine and food, during unexpected emergencies such as floods, fires and personal illness. WeCare traces its roots back to early 1984, when a group of Accounting employees began to salvage and sell computer paper with proceeds dedicated to the department's holiday party. When one of the employees in the department became ill and couldn't buy food for her two small children, the party money was loaned to her. As the funds grew, the employees became aware of other assistance needs and WeCare was born. All WeCare cases are submitted in confidence and reviewed by Continental's WeCare volunteer board of directors. In 2008, WeCare donated $ $981,704 to 766 Continental employees.

Donations are, of course, voluntary. FlyerTalk and Continental appreciate the donations you are providing to help those in need that serve us everyday in our air travel. Donations may or may not be tax deductible, please see your tax advisor for more information in this regard. If you wish to donate more than $500, please send me a PM.

All proceeds after Google Checkout transaction fees will go to CO WeCare. The Holiday 2009 Donation period will run from today (Oct 9th) through November 15th. After an final audit of the donations by xyzzy, a check will be delivered on behalf of Flyertalkers to COinsider in time for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays.

On behalf of Flyertalk and Continental Airlines WeCare,
COinsider, CJ1120, Hartmann, Randy Petersen, xyzzy

Please click on the link below to donate.

Update: The 2009 Holiday Drive is looking to raise $2000 for Continental WeCare.

i take it this is FT approved?

There have been some donations in the past that are pulled later (not saying funds don't go, but that FT ties and all history of them gone)

Hey Hartmann, the link at the end of the donation payment process forwards back to cogentas.com instead of FT. Not a big deal either way, but I didn't know if that was intentional.

Glad to see that we are doing this. I donated after the last CO IAH FT DO and glad to hear we as a group are going to be showing support to CO in this way. I will be stopping by to make my donation in the coming days. And of course since we are doing it online vs by check like I did we can earn some miles!!

Not intentional. I'll update it as soon as I have a chance.

is there going to be any update on how much is given throughout, and maybe after seeing response set a goal? I know I just gave, and would be willing to give a little more if we are short of a goal as a community.

We certainly will be giving updates periodically.

Currently we don't have a specific target since this is the first year of doing this and have no idea what to expect. But we hope that the response is good enough that we can turn this into an annual thing!

I'll talk to the committee and see if we can come up with a realistic goal.

Thanks to everyone that has donated so far!
