I'm Such An Idiot!!! A missed bump story...

So I was on a EWR-SEA flight earlier tonight and had 2A and had used miles to u/g. Overbooked. So they offer the next flight out that would get in 3 hours later in F n/s and a $300 voucher. I am the first at the desk. Then I do the tremendously stupid thing of trying to get a PC pass, particularly since I had one (although I was saving that one for a 4 hour layover next year). In the time I talked to the GA, a girl comes up, and I, for some reason, let her in front of me, and she takes it! That could've gotten me closer to Gold for '08 and I bet I would've gotten the mileage refunded. Argh. So that's the story. I'm apparently a moron. Oh well. At least I avoided a 20+ min security line.

Not a moron at all. You were probably just unconsciously exercising politeness by letting the girl in front .

However, I haven't heard of getting one's mileage refunded. If you are traveling on a mileage ticket, and you get a bump, are you saying that in addition to the voucher, you get your mileage back?

This part is confusing me. How is bumping from a flight on 25 Dec to 26 Dec helping you achieve Gold for '08? Unless the flight is scheduled to depart after 12:00 midnight on January 1, 07, the flight will count towards 2006 EQM.

That was a dumb thing to do though. Guaranteed F on EWR-SEA is amazing anyway - even though you had used miles to upgrade the first one. That route is still one of the hardest in the system to get upgraded on.

I think he/she meant that the voucher could've paid for an extra flight in 07 thereby helping to gain Gold status until 08.

Confused.

You were at the podium talking to the gate agent about getting a PC pass as part of the compensation, and they still let the other passenger take the bump while you were discussing? Or you were in line, stopped to fumble and look for the pass, and she got in front of you?

Can't figure out how if you were first at the desk someone got in front of you, unless they went to the adjacent agent.

I couldn't figure out how a bump would get him closer to gold either. Thanks for that explanation. As far as the girl getting in front of him, I think he was being polite figuring she only had a quick question to ask the GA. She was impolite to jump in front if she knew he was after the same seat as she was after.

Or there could have been two agents working the flight. The second agent took the girl's boarding pass and put a #1 on it as the first volunteer.

To clarify:

I am male and gay

The girl talked to the same agent I did

The voucher could've been used for MRs for NEXT year, as in 2007

And I don't know for certain, but something leads me to believe (based on past posts) that I could've gotten my mileage refunded, provided I was persistent enough with the OPSC

Im not a member of the PC either and Im a Plat. Whenever I run into misconnects or get a bump, I simply go the entrance of a PC keep my Plat card out and ask if they would be so kind as to bring me as a guest , since I now have x hrs before my new flight. Usually within 5-10 mins Im Inside. Yea you'll hav eto ask a few times, but I never had to stand there for more then 10 mins unless there wasnt anyone heading in.

Funny Id say 75% of the time Im taken in by a person with the Amex Card that allows them entrance. Being a guy giving the eyes wont help me at all

For the record, I'm male and straight, and would never do something as stupid as yielding a VDB to a woman.

This is purely speculation on my part, as I've never been in the situation you describe (i.e., bumped from a mileage upgraded segment to a later flight with the offer of flying F), but IMO, when one is bumped from a flight and offered a later flight, it is akin to being given a compleletly new ticket. Therefore, you "exchange" or "refund" your ticket on that segment for a completely new ticket in whatevever class of service is offered, plus a voucher. I would think, then, that one would be entitled to a refund of the miles. Perhaps someone knows for certain.
