Continental Airlines, R.I.P. 1934-2011

Today, Continental Airlines no longer exists after the combination of FAA Operating Certificates. All "Continental Flights" will have a callsign of United.

Goodbye, Continental and we thank you.

The name "Continental" does not exist, but it's actually the United operating certificate that was sunset, and they're using the legacy Continental operating certificate with the name "United." It's much like how they're doing a lot of the items in the merger. Continental is by no means dead.

Channel 9 will be interesting -- I'm sure controllers will accidentally say "Continental" here or there, especially when visually referring to aircraft, as the paintjob is Continental.

So, will the pre-flight safety videos on all flights be the UA version, starting today?

It ain't dead yet until the website changes to say United. As of now, it's still Continental.

Don't worry too much, the globe is on the tail and CO processes and policies are now taking the dominant position

Obviously, but there is still some nostalgia for a now defunct name.

Indeed. The huge "UNITED" down the side of the body just screams it.

No. The flights will still be marketed as CO and from a passenger perspective there are still two different carriers. The only difference is in the FAA call-sign and some operational procedures that don't really affect customers.

I still think they should use "Varney" as the call sign.

Wink I now pronounce you...

Think of it as a marriage where the wife is taking her husband's name, but she's the one calling the shots? "Yes, Dear..."
