Down in Chinatown, you can get satay of liver, lungs, and ... other things.
Oooo - We should do hot pot this year!!! Do you remember walking past the hot pot places with the tables set out on the sidewalk near the Chinatown Centre? Mmm, boiling chilies...
Yay - Singapore! I'm a strong probable as well. This year, I've decided to wait until the last minute to buy my tickets.
....
A random, nonsensical reason is good enough for planning a trip to the other side of the globe...
Random and nonsensical reasons work for me ... plus had a fantastic time attending my first SIN DO this year.
Likewise, I will wait to buy tickets in the hope that AC lowers the specific upgradeable fare of interest ... which has seen a major price increase since last purchased. Will have to be patient and hope that the fare is reduced or consider an alternate airline/routing for travel to SIN.
I hope my military training will not clash with the SIN Do and there is no way I can tell right now until I receive my notification from the Ministry.

Put me down as "possible".... need to figure out what excuse to tell the wife and kids to get away for the weekend....at least I have more than six months to come up with one.

yes, beer is available in Malaysia[/b], find transport to Larkin Terminal and return to Singapore via The Causeway.
As far as I am aware, there are precisely three (3) ferries from Singapore to anywhere in Malaysia. Quoting Wikitravel:
Pengerang: Bumboats shuttle between Changi Point Ferry Terminal at Changi Village, 51 Lorong Bekukong, tel: 65-65452305/1616, and Pengerang, a village at the southeastern tip of Johor. Boats ($9 per person, $2 per bicycle one-way) operate between 7 AM and 7 PM and leave when they reach the 12-passenger quota.
Sebana Cove Resort, Desaru: Ferries to/from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal operated by Indo Falcon, tel. +65-65426786 in Tanah Merah, [37]. Three ferries daily except Tue. $48/38 including taxes and fuel surcharge.
Tanjung Belungkor, Desaru: Cruise Ferries (tel. +65-65468518, 65468675) operates passenger ferries from Changi Ferry Terminal three times daily, departures at 10AM, 5PM and 8PM, $22 return. The previous car ferry service has been suspended.
All three destinations are in the general vicinity of Desaru, a low-key tourist destination with some fairly crappy hotels and lots of mediocre beach (better than anything in Sg, but no match for Thailand or most of the rest of Malaysia). Unfortunately, in January it will be monsoon season, so the water will be murky and the waves high. (Not a problem for the crossing, which is across sheltered waters, but you can forget about watersports.) The area is also quite distant from Johor Bahru (~100 km by road), with very little in the way of public transport, although this may change if they open the new expressway by next Jan (I wouldn't count on it). Some random pics from a weekend jaunt this January, and note that we were lucky with the weather:
Out of those three, I'd opt for Pengerang. While I haven't been there (yet?), seafood is good regardless of the weather, and if we can rustle up ~10 people, the on-demand ferry system is perfect for a larger group.
