It looks like option 2 might work for me. I didn't think of the
BKI possibility. I have been in and out of BWN half a dozen
times, but always from SIN.
The bus/ferry/taxi alternatives could be interesting diversions,
but once I leave KCH, I will have to switch from "leisure travel
mode" to "business travel mode", and then I will stick with "tried
and true" options, i.e. flying.
There are two flights a day in January BKI-BWN. Looks like the 6ish p.m. flight would work for the connection. Please remember that if you choose Air Asia, you have to take a taxi around the airport to the regular terminal. Rather quick not like KUL. Flight is scheduled at 40 minutes, I guess most of it is taxiing and giving out the two pieces of candy. Oh yes, also the prayer.
On further reflection, Air Asia has cut back and the connection will not work, but MH has two daily flights, one of which should result in a decent connection.
Will you guys still be meeting at the Newton Food Centre after the recent over-charged tiger prawns incident?

I was going to PM to ask if your Hawker Center is open 24-7. If it is, it might be a better sampling of Singapore than either Lao Pau Sat or touristy Newton.

You also have a PM.
Good Question. Let me check with my buddy...

The April 23 edition of the Straits Times contained an article concerning the closure for 3 months of booth 43 at Newton Hawker Center. After review by the licensing bureau and denial of the owners appeal, a three month revocation started today.
Therefore if one is desirous of spending approximately $US18 per prawn for 8 Tiger Prawns as one naive Seattle resident did (Ask how much it will cost before ordering) then you'll just have to wait.
Our own Starwood Lurker II is participating in the Singapore Film Festival. In what capacity, we do not know.
opushomes misplaced bag is alledgedly on the way from JFK where it became confused via JAX, an undisclosed intermediate city, ICN and on to Changi where it will hopefully be reuinted with its owner on Sunday. Thanks to the agent who met the plane with her shiny new DL name tag and uniform but still wearing her tattered NW-issued undergarments for sending the baggage agent to the transit hotel at 2a.m.to fill out the paperwork.
NW19 had 11 passengers in business class from NRT-SIN with the coach load not much better. Reminiscent of post-SARs hysteria.

Oh dear .
However the good news is that the Newton Hawker stand I prefer and have never had a bad deal at, is not stand 43 - phew!!!! It is in single digits, I just cant recall the number right now . Some well known ORD Fters eat there regularly too .
I guess in this case, YMMV .
Good luck with your bags, Opushomes - I hope they find their way to you very soon.
Boris and MashaG will tell you they have the best satay. The beef is quite good. Good enuf for a second helping, but to violist's disappointment they do not make liver satay.
1. Royal Air Brunei presently has twice a week service from Kuching to BWN Tuesday and Saturday. Shows still available in January.
2. Fly KCH-BKI (Kota Kinabalu) on Air Asia or MH and fly to BWN on Royal Air Brunei. It is about a fifteen minute flight on Royal Air Brunei.
3. Or from BKI take a taxi to the ferry to Brunei. The problem with this is that it is the expensive taxi ride from the pier in Brunei to the central part of the city, for example, the Sheraton. Four years ago it was in excess of $S50. Note: Brunei dollar is on a par with Sing dollar and both are interchangable.
4. Fly Air Asia to Labuan and take the ferry as above. When I did it I routed via Miri to Labuan.
5. Fly to Miri and catch the bus to Brunei. Downside is that it takes considerable time on the bus. One can also hire a taxi in Miri to the border and attempt to connect to a bus in Brunei.
Hopefully these alternatives are helpful. I have actually flown the BWN-BKI route. Royal Air Brunei is expensive.
BI operates as a Malaysia Air codeshare KUL-BWN on Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri, Sun in January which would be a back-track. It leaves at 2230.
Yay - Singapore! I'm a strong probable as well. This year, I've decided to wait until the last minute to buy my tickets. Every year for the past three years, United prices have either remained the same or dropped a couple hundred $ for a six-night minimum itinerary, so I'd rather not tie up my money for six months.
I'm somewhat interested in a side trip this year, maybe departing Sunday and returning to SIN on Tuesday for a Wednesday flight home. Even though opushomes diligently points me toward Kota Kinabalu, I still want to go to Bandar Seri Begawan, just because I like the name.
A random, nonsensical reason is good enough for planning a trip to the other side of the globe...
