Thanks appreciate the link, the train is a good idea and I do like taking the train, but...... if we leave Chicago on Friday evening, then I can't talk my fellow pax into stopping at this place for dinner: Stop 50 Pizza - Michigan City, Indiana Plus summertime is just such a great time to road trip !!!

Hmm... Mich City is usually the point where I step on the gas to get home or to Chi in time
Also note that summertime (especially June/July) is just such a great time when M-DOT decides to fix the I 94 and closes the second lane for a few miles here and there: http://mdotwas1.mdot.state.mi.us/pub...&Submit=Submit

Besides all the orange barrels, the Blue Angels will be performing at Willow run that weekend ---
Couple deals available for the DO:
Days Inn Livonia available for 5 Euro /night
Rodeway Inn 7 Euro /night
Super 8 Romulus Detroit or Knights Inn Madison Heights 8 Euro /night
In Ann Arbor, the following are availble:
Extended Stay America Detroit - Ann Arbor 38 Euro /night
Extended Stay Deluxe Detroit - Ann Arbor 45 Euro /night
And the DO education begins before the event! I love it.
Gardener, the financial guy in me would also ask you to look at what the cheapest R/T you think you can get on United is. Then, determine whether the extra money justifies the EQMs and bigger seat. This is something everyone values differently, but is something to consider. There is no right or wrong answer.
Perhaps the extra money can buy you a separate R/T ticket to another destination with more EQMs? Perhaps your time is more valuable and money isn't tight, so earning EQMs while in the sky is the most important?
These thoughts will be what happens to you when you spend way too much time thinking about this stuff.
Believe me I spend WAY too much time thinking about this stuff. It is more complicated than I have let on, last fall I won a $500 voucher for a local travel agent at a charity auction (bid and paid $175 for it!). Thing is, I don't want to ask him to do hidden city or any strange stuff as they can get in trouble. The voucher expires Sep 30th 2009 so I want to use it for this do.
I just used $280 of the voucher for another trip (redeposited an award flight on UA) so now as long as I can find a fare for $220 or a little more or less I am good to go. I did some thinking as you suggested and decided since I will already be away most of July time is of the essence and I want nonstop flights. So I am monitoring ABE-DTW on NW and PHL-DTW on US using YAPTA and when I see a fare close to $220 I am going to pounce.
Sold the wife on this by promising to bring back stuff from Zingerman's.
While I hate ESA, this is a great deal! If anyone is interested in sharing a room, please let me know. 39.52 EUR/night at the ESA for a room with two twin beds.
