OZ Fest 2004

Thanks to BA's infamous $20 booboo, I will have enough points and status to get to Australia in style come 2004. I would like as many of you as possible to join me there. I would like to see Perth, as well as Canberra, Melbourne, and ???. By '04, I should have enough time off for a 'walkabout.

I'd like to go in between semesters, so that would be early May or late August. Other times are possible....

"I was looking back on my life
And all the things I've done to me
I'm still looking for the answers
I'm still searching for the key
The wreckage of my past keeps haunting me
It just won't leave me alone
I still find it all a mystery
Could it be a dream?
The Road To Nowhere leads to me...." - Ozzy Osbourne

Well if it is an OZ FEST it better include Sydney ........ Senor Spiff.

June 1-August 30 is Winter here remember, but think CA/FL type winter temperatures in the main. I wear cotton shirts in June and not silk ones to warm up a little.

And remember this country is size of the lower 48, so MEL-Perth-Darwin-Cairns-SYD is akin to SFO-DFW-BOS-MIA-LAX in distance, and there are no decent round Australia points awards redeemable anymore, {used to be THE finest FF award in the world) and visitor airpasses are a LOT higher in $$$ than they used to be. Qantas is the ONLY internal airline to award points for flights.

And stay clear out OUR school vacation breaks as fares are often 50% higher in those times. Sadly .... these vary markedly state to state, but early May is a pretty clever choice of dates.

Virgin Blue is luckily adding a lot of routes nationally, and now include Perth and Darwin and Cairns, so that may keep costs down and in my experience lately they are ALWAYS lower than Qantas. (But right now no FF plan and are all one class).

For anyone wanting to paly with figures and routes try looking at www.travel.com.au for a wide range of services, tours, Hotels and flights.

And buying flights sooner than later may be wise as the $A has gained near on 10% against $US in very recent times.

C'mon down ................

For accomodation,

last minute you can try (closer to the date)

http://www.wotif.com
http://www.lastminute.com.au
http://www.needitnow.com.au
http://www.dingoescape.com

you can book in advance on Priceline HK and Priceline Singapore for some good rates in AU.

And a visit to AU is incomplete without a trip to SYD. We'll even put on a special get together if a few FT'ers come down i'm sure.

Anyone for prawns????

So should we start thinking about May of 2004?

We really do need to get to Australia someday soon.

It is hard for me to plan a month in advance nevertheless more than a year but, I would love to join you all on your 'walkabout' if that road is open to me

tazi .... as long as you buy Senor Spiff the occassional beer I assume you will be most welcome.

The way getting UA award seats in C or F down here is lately Punki, planning ahead is pretty smart. Right now no penalty if you ever cancel the booking. How far ahead will they allocate award seats does anyone know? Is that the same 330 days out as revenue seats, or is it more long dated?

Recommend May over August especially for Perth. As WA does not recognise daylight savings, sunset is very early, and days are short(unless you get up at the crack of dawn)

Found a pretty useful chart listing ALL state school vacation terms, (which vary markedly from those in the USA) and ALL public holidays for all states:

http://www.oztourism.com.au/ozhols.htm

As I mentioned above, flying ANYWHERE in or around school vacation periods will be suicide for your wallet re airfare and hotel costs.

Bummer. I recently got my booking for mid-September, 2003. If anyone's going to be in Australia at that time, please post.

Mr DK_1KGal is definitely interested in a walkabout -- has the time, has the miles and loves both Australia and New Zealand
