WineDo 8 - June 14, 2015 - NYC
Save the Date:
Sunday June 14. North Square.
Time 6:30 - 9:30.
Theme:
Foreign Exchange (this means no US wines unless you're from outside the US).
Sub-theme > Champagne ^
WineDo 7 thread here > http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...-2014-nyc.html
Some background details
WineDo 1 started as a dinner the day after BRT. The theme was bring your best wine. Bottles ranged in price from $10 - $250. Just as wine improves with age, so did WineDo. Our goosey Lucy dinners started to have themes. We increased the minimum dollar amount of the wines to $35. You could bring a bonus bottle at any price, but your main bottle had to be verifiable $35. In theory, we were protecting our palette against marginal wines. The reality is that many attendees, some that have a knowledge of wine and some that didn't, stepped up and brought expensive bottles. And by expensive I mean $75 +.
For the cost of dinner and a bottle of wine, you will drink great juice.
Dinner is open to everyone, even beer drinkers.
There are plenty of stores in New York to buy wine. You can also source from my cellar.
Past WineDo's have filled up with a maximum of 24 attendees. We usually somehow manage to drink through 35+ bottles.
Sign up below. Maximum of 24 attendees. Cost is $82.

Please pencil me in. I'm waiting for my work schedule to fall in place, and fingers crossed it will fall the right way (in NYC).
Does it has to be French Champagne, or would an appropriately priced Cava or Prosecco pass?

Last year, post Winedo, violist had an idea. @:-)
A couple thoughts.
Perhaps next time we should have half the people bring two bottles
and the others coast (with a contribution to be divided among the
providers for the privilege). That might cut the confusing aspects
of the tasting.
I think it's a good idea if we got together to pool resources. As an example, if KathyWdrf contributed her minimum dollar amount towards something in my cellar, that would mean a $70 + bottle of wine would be in play at dinner, instead of two $35 bottles. Thoughts? It would help to reduce all the excess wine.
As always, a 2nd bottle is optional.

Any thought about the specific theme(s) for the DO?
I know sub-theme is bubbly (aka: seems like a tenure sub-theme )
Now that I see the main, I can offer:
Burgundy, Alsace , Rhône or Bordeaux. I'd let cfischer offer bubbles first before I decide if there's something in my micro cellar to meet the challenge.

Theme:
Foreign Exchange
This means no U.S. wines at WineDo 8.
Put your thinking caps on.
N.B. if you're from out of the US, you can bring a US wine.
Sub-theme > Champagne
Foreign Exchange gives you wide latitude. You can bring a wine from a winery or region that you've visited (or want to visit).

aacharya (no +1 yet)
I like the theme. I would have loved it if we made it even harder (excluding even more countries).
As for the double-up concept - I love it - as we did have a bit extra last time (we're all very generous!).
I do regret not following through on mini-DOs or even a purge of the wine cellars. I'm at a number that is uncomfortably high with respect to the size of my townhouse.

Pencil me in, too! I will be in California the week after this but will try to arrange my travel schedule to be in NYC until after this event, which I could not possibly fathom missing.
