boxo, somebody had to man up and go and knock on the offending members' door to ensure that we weren't going to leave too late (or leave him behind). As I know him well and knew his room number, seemed opportune - plus I couldn't pass up the chance of paying out on him for the next year

Had a look at AKL hotel rooms late may and they were pretty terrifying.

Any input from Kiwi members on suggestions?

I looked at the Accor site and the Mercure on the waterfront there, where I have stayed before, is $US108 a night without being on sale, though I see three of their higher end properties are sold out already.

Also looked at Wellington, which would be my preference, and there's two Mercures and one Ibis (have stayed there) from $US82-109.

Booking.com, which I frequently use for research, shows that 32 of the 65 properties in Auckland they have access to in the CBD are available. For Wellington, they show 48 of 70 properties available. I looked at the Intercontinental in Wellington and it's available at $US195 a night.

Good post Tom.

I looked a the AKL Hilton which was about $300 a night and as they have no lounge, little gain for that to be party central as Hilton in other cities have often been.

Most bookings will be for 3 or 4 nights so at $300 it runs up.

AKL was one suggestion, although I personally agree that CHC and WLG both offer interesting things to do for a few days.

Maybe our Kiwi folks can add their thoughts?

It could be said that the AKL Hilton for NZD300 per night is on the lower end of the scale for that place ...

It was where I would utilise my yearly Hilton Diamond/Premium Club $100 (NZD113) night most often.

Maybe ZQN can become a contender? There's a cheap hilton, and being in central otago its where all the good pinot noirs are!

There has been a FT Do in ZQN, and has the advantage of being an international airport with flights from Australia east coast.

Yes there is, and Rotorua is close enough to visit also.

The main disadvantage of Taupo (and Rotorua) is more difficult to reach - there aren't a lot of flights. TUO only has Beech 1900D flights from AKL & WLG!

Indeed, if it was TUO then AirNz may need to up-gage to a larger aircraft... or some of us could drive

Or a Flyertalk bus? From memory about 3 hours from AKL? It is a lovely spot.
