Regretfully, I also need to withdraw -- there just aren't enough vacation days to cover all the travel I have planned for the year. (Also, uncertainty relating to the Continuing Resolution funding my job and those of all other US government employees, which currently expires March 27, and the possibility that I'll be deemed an essential employee -- meaning all vacation days would be canceled -- makes the timing of this Do particularly difficult for me.) I'll have to attend vicariously by continuing to follow this thread and hopefully reading some trip reports.

Thanks for the opinions and yes, I saw that 'special' and had an ironic chuckle. I'll order my JR East pass from here.

One can do the airport cruise and the Shinkhansen trip on the same day?

Yes, the train arrives back in Tokyo at 16:12. There should be more than enough time to travel from Tokyo Station to Haneda Airport International Terminal where we will be picked up at 17:40.

Buying Nagano Shinkansen tickets online

Train out: Asama 509, dep. Tokyo 08:36, arr. Nagano 10:18.
Train back: Asama 530, dep. Nagano 14:26, arr. Tokyo 16:12.
Everyone is responsible for booking their own ticket.
A return ticket costs 15,940 yen standard class and 17,920 yen Green Car (First Class).

I have never booked a train ticket using this website myself. If you find anything different from what is described below or anything others should know, please let me know and I will update the post.

Go to JR East Shinkansen Reservation website:
http://jreast-shinkansen-reservation...menu/menu.aspx

Select 'Travelers with a JKP (JR Kanto Area Pass) and travelers without a rail pass' (third option). Anyone with a JR East Pass should follow the appropriate link. Please see posts #535, 537 & 538 about the JR East Pass.

On the next page click SEARCH ROUTES >>

Select Nagano Shinkansen, [Departs] Tokyo, [Arrives] Nagano, [Boarding date] Month:03 Day:30 Hour:08 Min:36, Search by Scheduled Departure

Click SELECT TRAINS >>

Select
Asama 509
Tokyo (08:36) - Nagano (10:18)

On the next screen you will be asked to select a station ticket office (window) where you will pick up your tickets. Most JR stations in central Tokyo as well as Narita Airport T1 and T2 are listed. Tickets must be collected by 9pm the day before travel. Tickets cannot be collected on the day of travel.

On the next page you will be asked for the number of passengers, Ordinary or Green (First Class) and Window or Aisle seat. You will also have to register as a 'member' by providing a credit card number and email address.

A ticket from Nagano back to Tokyo will have to be booked separately. The return fare of 15,940 yen includes reserved seats.

Online reservations can only be made from one month before the date of travel up until 5pm three days prior to travel. You must take your reservation number and the credit card you used to register as a member when collecting tickets. Your credit card is only charged when you collect your tickets.

Ticket offices where you collect your tickets can be identified by one of these logos. Where to find ticket offices (View Plaza or Midori no Madoguchi) may be found here.

View Plaza & Midori no madoguchi logos

If you wish to cancel your reservation there are no cancellation fees for cancellations up until midnight two days before the traveling date, but cancellation fees of 300 yen per seat will apply after this time.

Nagano Shinkansen trains consist of eight carriages of which one is a Green Car (First Class). Three carriages usually have reserved seats and the remainder have unreserved seats.

The seating in the standard class is 2-3 and in the first class 2-2.
