my membership is due again in september, and given all the above changes mentioned and also the fact that they dont have this citigold discount, i'm finding it quite hard to justify keeping this card for another year. tbh, i bought this hoping to use the free companion ticket, but could never find a decent flight anywhere through spirit. can anyone recommend a card similar to this (is the amex platinum the only other comparable choice)?

also, have they done away with citi prestige access to american airlines lounges? an AU on my card was told that yesterday while flying out of JFK (international terminal 8).

No, but this benefit is only offered to the primary cardholder. You may bring guests, but an AU cannot access on his or her own.

In light of these changes, I am highly likely to cancel in September (my anniversary date).

I do have a question, though, as an annual fee newbie. Is there a way to time cancellation so that it happens after my anniversary bonus points post, but before next year's annual fee hits? I'd prefer not to abandon my anniversary bonus, but it certainly wouldn't be worth a $350-$400 annual fee.

Reportedly yes, but nothing official on any of the changes.

The points of the card will apparently be:

• $0.0133 and $0.016 value per point when redeemed for airfare, which is higher than Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards
  
• Airline transfers. We don't know who the transfer partners will be, nor if the ratio will be 1:1 to all partners, nor if all points will be eligible for transfer. My hunch is that AA will not be a transfer partner, and that points earned through banking will be excluded, but they could also exclude Flight Points if they are concerned about large transfers of legacy balances before closing.

The annual fee and anniversary points should be on the same statement. Let them both post, and then call to cancel. You shouldn't have to pay the annual fee and you'll be able to keep the points.

Transfer to AA and/or transfer of legacy balances would be unreal.

I'd have my parents get the card just to dump their ~300K TY points into an airline.

I can't see how they'd allow points from banking, either. But I'll take my Forward earning 5 MILES per dollar @ Amazon and Dining if they do transfer. Or, with the 1.6 multiplier on TY points, I get 8% when redeeming for US/AA flights. Pretty nice. That multiplier might even be worth keeping the card for me if they retain the $200 in airfare reimbursement annually. I usually earn ~80K TY points a year. $800 in GC, $1064 in any flights, $1280 in AA/US flights.

I went into a local branch today and was confirmed that the following benefits are going away in October:

Annual free companion ticket
15% discount on airfares
Airport Angel lounge access
Flight points (that can convert into TYP)

New benefits to be added are:

A new airport lounge access benefit (to replace Airport Angel)
More TYP on airfare purchases.

They don't allow transfer of banking points to Hilton, so I doubt they would to airlines, either.

The fee on the website is $450 (used to be $400), sounds like they are still giving a $50 discount, just on the new AF.

I paid last year $400. this year I'm gold and got a letter a few weeks before the renewal that due to my relationship the annual fee would be lower, when I got the bill with annual fee it was $350

I don't know if this is their way of wrapping up flight points, but my statement just closed and I was awarded flight points for the flights (using companion ticket) bought this month but haven't flown yet. Actually I used both my companion tickets this month, one credited but the other didn't.

ohh, I think I see what happened. The charge by USAir has the departure date as 5/12/14, not 5/12/15. Even though I bought the ticket on 6/27/14. The system must have thought I already flew and thus awarded me points this month.
