Thank you for the insight. I will head to the MS forum for some more advice. I had not thought of the "single transaction" aspect, for previously, I had only loaded up on non-VGC GC's that I knew I would eventually use, and well, that was easy to accomplish even if that's all I had to buy. My goal is pretty basic, but I'd like to learn whatever I can along the way.

It is very simple. Citi only treats GC purchase as Cash Advance when your GC is bought DIRECTLY from a financial institution.

Somehow this tidbit of info got lost when it is spread hundreds times across internet and people only pick up the GC purchase -> cash advance on Citi cards, with the most important part of info totally got lost...

You can buy a VGC ALONE at a retailer other than a financial institution and it is still treated as a Purchase, Except, it is easily identify just by the amount of it, the bank knows what you buy if it looks at your account. The risk is not CA, but account closure if you do this too many times, and how sensitive the bank is, on this type of Purchases.

I have bought GC from some "financial institution" using a citi card and counted as purchase multiple times in the last 8 months.

After some initial concern a while back, we've been happily MSing away for the past 18 months or so, including a number of Plat AA cards last summer, and a number of EXECs this year. Minimum spend done entirely on MS. Our 7 EXEC cards covered in single visits to CVS, charging $5K plus fees only each time. Not a peep out of Citi....

In fact, approved for my 3rd Exec and her 4th Exec a month ago, and a Citi HH 50K card for each of us 8 days later. Both of mine with instant approvals. A year ago, calling to cancel a card, the Citi Retention Specialist tried to get me to not cancel it by reminding me it get 3X points on "drug store purchases", no doubt seeing my monthly visits to CVS on my file.

There some far out things you can do to get your accounts canceled, like doing thousands of $0.01 purchases on a card that gives 10 points per purchase. But you really have to go out of your way to do that.

Hey-- here is a completely different version of the Business card-- Companion pass, 5% bonus miles, 2x at office supply stores and more.

http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/ea...usiness#drop-1

Applied but was denied because I was not a first-time CitiBusiness/AAdvantage cardmember.

Worth a try.

When is the last time you applied for the biz card? Do you still have it? If not, when did you close it? If closed, did you confirm that ALL accounts associated with the account were closed?

Previous business card and all associated accounts closed within the last 3 months. Citi specifically stated that I was denied because I had a previous business card--no time frame mentioned.

May take 12-18 months before I am eligible again. Or maybe never. I'm just moving on to other cards.

Thank you - it's clear they are taking a stance on biz cards now, as well. I know there are sporadic previous reports of this, but it seems to be more commonplace now.

I bet your financial institution is NOT AMEX.

If this card can't be churned (at least within 18 months), why isn't there a language stating that in the offer detail?

So if I have an executive card in the past few months, I can't get the new AA newly designed Plat Select card and get the 50K mile bonus, right?

firsttimeflying Nov 2, 2014 1:26 am

Are some of these new cards the same as the old ones?

Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance if I did not post in the best place. I opened Citi AAdvantage Visa Platinum (07/2013) and Citi AAdvantage Visa Gold (06/2013). Both cards are not closed.

Could I apply and receive the 50K bonuses for, Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard then 8 days later, apply for the CitiBusiness/AAdvantagePlatinum Select World MasterCard?

Are these different cards from what I previously had to now? The cards look different or are they the same and I will be ineligible to participate for the rewards program?

So, in other words, what is the difference between: Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard and Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard? Because they both offer 50K and look almost identical.

Lastly, what card do you recommend that I should take advantage of next? Thanks!

True. But I remember spring 2013, when you couldn't churn the AA Plat card; then all of a sudden they started giving out 50K cards like candy. Then with no notice, they closed down the link, and everyone was so sad. Followed of course by the EXEC offer for 100K. There is just no predicting Citi, they may do anything anytime.

When CVS went cash only on VRs, everyone was saying goodbye to MS. But it turned out OVs worked just fine, and just a $ more. Then one day GCs didn't work at WM any more, and again, the end of MS. Turned out that was only true for a week or so, and then back to normal.

I've been thru "the end of the miles and points game" more times than I can count. And yet every time something has closed down, something else has opened up.

Right now I have more miles, points, and already booked International First Class award trips than I ever have had before. It could all be coming to an end, but that's been predicted for years now. And like the imminent Second Coming of Christ, and the horrors of Global Warming, the predictions just keep being totally wrong. I'm not holding my breath on the "end of churning at Citi" either.

Ok. I'll hang in there and hope for the best! I totally missed the Plat spend. Got my first Plat card in Aug just before the closed it down. :(

Just applied and was approved for #3, 2 days ago. Btw. Will be be getting the anniversary 10k on the card which it includes (my card 1 only) for 2015 only.... Or is it supposed to be as long as we have the card? Don't know if I should just close the card after I get the miles or not.

Citi is different than Chase. Chase is strict about bonuses based on whether or not you have had the specific card in the past. Citi only really cares about the category of card. Personal, Business, Executive.

If you wait another month or two you can likely get an AA Personal card again, 18 months after last successful app.

Maybe you missed the email. Barclays announced that the 10K anniversary bonus will continue on past the merger. They want people to keep the cards, especially since they won't be able to sign up new people after that.

I'm not sure, but I don't think the cards being issued now have that anniversary bonus included, so if you want to keep getting that, cancel the new cards and keep your older card open.

The "different card" policy doesn't work with AA cards anymore. All Citi AA cards, with the exception of the EXEC card, require waiting at least 12 months, usually 18 months, sometimes 20+ months, since you last applied for ANY type of personal Citi AA card.

You can wait, probably until sometime in January when you hit 18 months. Or you can apply for an EXEC right now. If you haven't had a Business card, you can apply for that now. You can also apply for a Barclays 40K mile US Air card, and those US miles will soon become AA miles.

If you apply for an EXEC, be sure to read the Wiki for that, as the newer app links will not qualify for the bonus when you've had an AA card recently. The wiki still has an old link that does qualify.:

I did miss that email... good to know!! On the downside... I ALMOST cancelled my US Air with the Anniversary bonus but did accidentally reduce the CL to $1000 in preparation of cancelling in. I called and told them that I reduced the CL on the wrong card within 24 hours and they basically said too bad, but we can do a credit pull and increase your limit. Tired to get some of my CL moved from my other card but they said no! Oh well... I don't use that card anyway & have only got the 3 month special offer 1x.

My spouse just got this: • Your application is pending further review and we need additional information from you. Please call 1-866-606-2787 now to receive an immediate decision.

Can we wait it out and get a decision? He hates all this credit card stuff. (Serve just about had him jumping off a cliff - I had no problems with mine and his was a nightmare).
