When do my Thank You points expire?

It depends.

It's important to understand that if you have multiple Citi cards ("sponsor accounts") generating points into a single TY account, those pooled points may have different expiration dates based upon the rules of the corresponding sponsor account. Points from some sponsor accounts never expire as long as the sponsor account is open, while others have an expiration date based on the date of earning. (For a comprehensive list of expiration rules, see the TYP T&C.)

To complicate matters further, points-earning activity from a sponsor account will often extend the validity of older points from that same sponsor account.

What happens when I cancel a credit card from which I have earned TY points?

Points previously earned from that sponsor account will expire after 60 days.

What happens when I downgrade a Prestige card or Premier card from which I've earned TY points?

A product change from one ThankYou earning card to another ThankYou earning card should keep the points from expiring.

What are the rules for sharing points from my account to another TY account?

If you share points with (that is, make an internal TY transfer to) another TY account, those points will expire 90 days after the transfer. Note that
  • this is true regardless of whether you share to another TY user or to another TY account you hold (if you have multiple TY accounts);
  • you may not share points that are expiring in less than 90 days; and
  • you may not share more than 100K points (or receive more than 100K shared TY points) in any calendar year.

For details, see ThankYou Point Sharing capped at 100,000 points per calendar year

When I redeem points (for travel, gift cards, etc.), which ones does Citi use up first?

Citi will use the points with the soonest expiration date, which may or may not be points from a canceled sponsor account.

How can I see my expiring points?

Follow these steps:
  1. Log into your Thank You account (either directly or via citicards.com)
  2. From the My Account menu (top right of screen), select either "My Account Overview" or "My Points Summary"
  3. Look for a statement near the top of the screen such as "You do not have any points expiring within the next 60 days or less"
  4. Select "View all expiring points"
  5. Alternate: If logged in, you should be able to see the list at:https://www.thankyou.com/accountStatementExpiry.jspx
Note: The totals displayed will not include points expiring within 60 days as a result of closing a sponsor account. SOURCE

Why do I see a warning that points expire in 7 days after converting from Citi Preferred to Citi Rewards+?

Citi acknowledges this message can appear in error after converting from one ThankYou credit card to another type of ThankYou credit card. If your points actually expired they will adjust the point balance upon request. In at least one case, the expiration never occurred despite the message.

If you converted a ThankYou credit card to a non-ThankYou credit card, that may be a different issue, and it's possible points really will expire by the stated deadline.
The info about 24-month clocks vs product changes came from these web pages:

By "maintain", do you mean reset or not reset? Either way, as you can see from posts just above yours, this is still an open question. People have gotten conflicting answers from agents, but I don't think anyone has reported what actually happened in that scenario.

ETA: Over on the Citti AA thread, it has apparently been established that downgrading one of those cards is the same as closing in that it resets the 24-month clock. That would lead me to suspect the same is true here.

I downgraded from a Premier to a Preferred; the card and related documents arrived in separate envelopes within 2 weeks.

Advice on the ATTAM & getting value for hotels

First, a bit of background.

I have around 80K worth of TYPs from the ATTAM card that I would like to use for hotel redemptions, so I jumped on the recent Prestige promotion to enhance the collection. The issue with that combination is the quirk with the Prestige and hotels: points earned on the Prestige are only worth 1 cpp, but with the Premier (or points pooled from one) they are worth 1.25 cpp.

I'm considering two basic options:

1. PC the ATTAM to a Premier (assuming that's even possible.) The advantage here is that I keep the 24 month clock in sync with the new Prestige, keep the TYPs earned on the ATTAM card, get the 1.25 cpp redemption value for hotels, and have only the two Citi TYP cards to juggle. The disadvantage is that I would lose the 3x online points from the ATT card. That spend would be switched to the Chase ecosystem, which I prefer. I've been able to offset the AF (posting in June) by putting 10K on it annually.

2. Signing up for a new Premier and keep the ATTAM card one more year. That would give me the better hotel redemption rate. No signup bonus, but the AF should still be waived for the 1st year, and I would be able to reevaluate in 24 months.

TIA for any input...

If you have 80k points then you're talking $200 Of value between 1.25 and 1 c options. I get far more value out of my ATTAM than $200 given it's my main driver (bulk of my spend is online)

Few options also:
Can you realize more value for TYP with prestige if you get the 4th night free and book with points?

How about transferring to Hilton? If Hilton works for you doesn't Citi have a transfer promo at the moment?

I will have the signup bonus from the Prestige in addition to 80K from the ATTAM, so will definitely be able to make good use of 4th night free. I moved my online spend (mostly Amazon) to Chase (Prime Rewards/5% CB) last year, but with the Prestige on the way I am thinking I should move it back and keep the ATTAM card. I really should be able to get more than 5% worth of value with the ATTAM/Prestige combination.

I'd love to use Hilton, but every time I look to see how many HH points they want for any given redemption I'm horrified.

ATTAM is my new Costco card. I order Costco cash cards online then use those in the warehouse and at the Costco pump. Plus the 24m warranty makes it superior to chase IMO.

I don't expect the extended warranty would apply to anything you buy with a giftcard, even if the giftcard was purchased with a Citi card?

Correct.

Costco cash cards are for groceries and supplies. Bulk of stuff I need warranty on I buy on Costco online, or usually Amazon

Today, when cancelling my card (after one year), I got hammered by the citi rep wanting to know why I was cancelling, saying "I see you've closed 10-15 cards with us" and "didn't you know there would be a $450 annual fee?" and on and on and on. My goodness. He finally cancelled me, but wow...

What happens to purchases made with TYPs that are returned after account closing? It seems like you get a cash credit if the account is still open (as opposed to redepositing the points) based on my sketchy read of the T&Cs, but I don't know for sure.

If a cash credit, I assume it would post even if card is cancelled (just like a regular return).

I have a Prestige, Premier and AT&T combined into Prestige as the main account. I recently transferred some points out and plan to cancel the AT&T soon. It didn't occur to me until just now, but would the points I just transferred out be coming from AT&T even though I'm cancelling after the transfer?

The oldest points tend to be used first. You can look to see which "sponsor" account points remain in what amounts, "sponsor" accounts is how Citi identifies which card you earned which points with.

If your AT&T points were not your oldest ones (and thus used up already in the transfer), you may have to transfer (or otherwise use) more of them to use them up before they go "poof 60ish days after cancelling.

My Prestige AF was due, so I called to downgrade to Preferred. No push-back or cajoling, just making sure I heard the Preferred terms and what I would be losing, before I confirmed the request.

She told me that the card number would change, which was quite disappointing. We'll see whether she was right.

I downgraded Premier to Preferred in Jan/feb and the number or expiration didn't change. I then changed preferred to ATT Access More and it only changed numbers then n
