FAQ

1. Are these cards churnable?
Yes, they are. BUT you’ll have to wait anywhere from 12 to 26 months before applying again. Approvals have happened at the 13 month mark and denials at 24.
There is no set 18 month rule, but always err on the side of caution when churning.
Also- it’s from DATE OF APPROVAL and not from date of cancellation.

2.What are the most current rules in applying for these cards?
#ONLY ONE APPLICATION in a day (make that 30 hours to be safe)
#No more than 2 apps in 65 (approximately) days.
Example:
Day 1 40K personal platinum
Day 2 or later 25-30K personal gold
65+ days later 40K business

While the day limits are a little flexible by a few days either way and YMMV, the rules themselves are not flexible.

3. How long does it take for the Admiral passes to arrive?
For the better part, it takes about 3 months. This is not a set number, and some have received theirs sooner. It's been deduced that the passes are handled by a 3rd party that mails them in batches. Please don’t call Citi for the passes, because you’ll mostly find a CSR who doesn't know better and will give you wrong information.

4. Can I apply for a business card if I don’t have a business?
Technically, you can. But you may be asked for a 4506-T form, or to provide proof of business or/and a copy of a bill with your business name on it. If you don't already have a credit history for the business name you plan to use (meaning this is your first rodeo) then it is recommended you use your name as the business name with no income and 0 as years in business.

5. How do I get the statement credit?
First, you have to make sure if the offer you signed up for gave you A $150 credit or UP TO A $150 statement credit. For the 1st, any AA coded purchase ($50 AA GC seems to be the simplest option here) will/should trigger it. For the 2nd, you’ll have to spend $150 to get the $150 credit.
For more information on what will work and what won’t, please see here (thanks sdsearch) and here (thanks dogbyte)

6. Does the $150 account credit (for AA purchases using the VISA or AMEX) count against the spending required to receive the initial mileage bonus?
No. It does not. (Put differently: any account credit you receive has no impact on your spending total for purposes of earning the "X thousand miles for $Y spent in the first Z months" bonus.)

7. Can I buy Visa gift cards to meet my minimum spend?
There’s a very good chance that it’ll be coded as a cash advance.
It’s recommended to call citi and have them set your Cash Advance limit to zero. (thanks KennyBSAT)

8. Do I get 10% back when redeeming miles for awards?
It depends. First, the rebate program (which began in April 2012) applies only to holders of these cards:
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
  • Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
It does not apply if you hold only the Citi Gold World MasterCard.

Also, the maximum rebate for any cardholder in a single calendar year is 10,000 miles. Having more than one qualifying Citi AA card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate; the restriction applies per AAdvantage account.

9. At what locations are my one day Club passes valid?
All valid locations are listed here.

If you have no luck getting the fee waived, instead of cancelling you can try downgrading. There is a bronze version of the AA card which gives 0.5 miles/$ and it has no annual fee. I don't know if Citi still allows this. The poor earning ratio makes this card pretty useless. Just use it once or twice a month for small purchases. The advantage is that when you apply for a card in the future, you will have a credit line to help with reconsideration (if needed) and longer history. I think the bronze card would allow you to take advantage of Citi checking offers too.

For your spouse, have a look at the sticky in this forum. He could get another big bonus from Chase/Amex but the annual fee issue will come up in another year. Most rewards cards have a fee. The only ones I know of that don't have it are Citi/Amex Hilton cards. Also some cards will give you some anniversary benefits which will negate the fees.

Question New here! aadvantage bonus miles ?

Hi!

First off, I am finding the whole miles thing a little overwhelming, I am hoping for some patience and guidance.

I read on a miles blog about how you can apply on two different browsers at the same time to get two different citi aadvantage cards and 100k bonus miles, have any of you had success with this or had it fail? My plan is for both my husband and I each getting two cards.

Also I received a paper offer for the citi business aadvantage (not a business owner but do sell some of my photography every now and then.) If I do the double browser trick should I do a personal and a business or two personal (Am ex and visa), which is less risky?

If I am approved, in your experience, how long does it take to get the bonus miles after reaching the spending requirement?

Also this is for a trip that would be mid june and would involve a codeshare flight MCO to LGW on BA, right now all that is available is business/first milessaaver, which is more than fine if I can get the miles. Is it risky to bet on getting these seats with miles if it is May before I can book them?

Sorry for so many questions and thank you in advance for your help

Welcome! There used to be a 75k offer for the AA cards. In the thread for that offer, in Post #2, are the answers to most of your questions - and many, many other details. Here's a link to that thread, check out the second post: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...t-2-first.html

See that thread. Dozens (hundreds?) of reports.

Typically it is easier to get approval for personal apps, since sometimes, without any discernible pattern, Citi will decide to ask for lots and lots of business documentation. More importantly, though, you MUST apply on the same day for two personal cards. Otherwise, you will not be approved for the second one. So if you apply for a personal and a business, you cannot later go back and get the second personal. (At least for roughly 18 months.)

A few days after the statement closes.

Very complicated question but the short answer is that availability can vary wildly over time. The key would be to find several other options that could also work for you. That will take the pressure off. You could also try asking in the BA forum about trends on that route but you'll probably get the same answer.

Sorry for so many questions and thank you in advance for your help
The first round of answers is free for newbies. But now that you know about the AA card threads, you have a lot of reading to do.

Thank you and I will start reading! I only wish that I would have discovered this idea a few years ago, it would have saved me some money and possibly the misery of long haul in coach.

Thanks so much!

Ah, but then you wouldn't have known the misery of long haul in coach This way you'll really appreciate the miles and business/first class!

Lots of good information. Elabut-I got the no fee card offered, guess that will work. At least I will have it to use for another checking offer.
MDtR-Chicago hubby can get more cards for sure. 2 AA cards every 18 months or so would work. Could use his account for travel instead of both.
Biggestbopper- Chase Sapphire will work, but we both have the UAL cards and I think I read you only get one bonus with them. As for self employed I don't really have an income that is just mine at this point in time.
This trip I just got back from was my first time in first class. I really loved it. It has spoiled me.
Does anyone know of another Citi checking offer for AA miles? I closed one a few months ago. Thanks for all the great info.

It's generally one bonus per loyalty partner, with business and personal versions considered separately. So a personal UA card will probably make you ineligible for another personal UA card but has nothing to do with Sapphire.

I'm trying to apply for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Visa (got a personal Citi visa 60+ days ago), and there are a lot of items on the application like the following:

Legal Name of Business
Years in Business
Name of Business for Card
Number of Employees
Line of Business
Annual Revenue

I read in the old 75k miles thread that you don't have to own a business to get a Citi Visa business card -- if not, then what kind of stuff should I enter for these business-related questions? I hear that some people get followup requests for documentation of their business, while others skate through without it. I wonder if the decision hinges on how these questions are answered?

Thanks,
Os

Citi Business Reconsideration Dept

I was recently declined for the Citi Business card for too many inquiries. I got my credit report and have been calling, but the call center in Manila or wherever it is is zero help! They always say there is not a supervisor available and they will set up a call back from one, but I have not gotten any calls from a sup. Is this a lost cause? Does anyone have any experience with this? The main Citi number said that I would have to go through the applications department.

Here is a list of phone numbers from the expired 75K thread. I can't remember which one I called in September, but it was from this list and the rep was very nice, however Citi is not as recon-friendly as Chase, for example. Good luck!

Citi: 888-201-4523 (New App Approval Status)

Citi AA: 888-662-7759

Citi App Status: 800-645-7240, 800-288-4653, 800-750-7453

Citi: 800-444-2568 (Retention Dept.)

Citi: 800-763-9795 (Credit Dept.)

Citi Credit Bureau Dispute Fax: 866-713-5028

Edit to add: I would start with the 1-888-201-4523 number (9:00 am to 9:00 pm EST, Monday - Friday). I have a feeling that was the number I called.

The decline for too many inquiries is a systemic automated decline. I successfully requested resubmission by doing the following:

* pulled a copy of the credit bureau in question
* wrote a short letter highlighting my positives
* low debt, high FICO, long credit file, etc
* faxed in the above for the quickest reconsideration by a live person

Keep in mind the bureau I faxed back was exactly the same inquiries they declined me for. I just had a real person take a better overall look at my total qualifications. Cards came soon after.

Just be honest, I considered by business as me selling things on ebay, use your name for the business name as a sole proprietorship, 1 year in business, 1 employee, line - think I put service, and revenue was only a couple hundred dollars. Got approved without any further doc required (and a surprising high limit considering my revenue was less than 1k). If they need more "proof" you can submit your bills / checking account since your name matches the business name.

Good luck.
