Redeem points for the dates after expiration

I have some points to be expired by this end of year. I have plans to travel next January. Can I redeem points in Dec for the Jan stay? Thanks.

Yes, but if you cancel in January, you may find that your points vanish.

It use to be cancelled rez's returned the points to the current bucket, but that has been fixed. If you just need a short extension, then I'd suggest going for the gift cards. Just be aware some of them have maintenance fees after six months, but that is better than just letting the points go away.

Somehow I am not allowed to redeem my points other than free night... because I didn't have a eligible stay ever since 2007
