Travel safety -- Jiuzhaigou

We were planning a visit next month (yes, the weather isn't ideal at this time of year.)

Her sister says it would be unsafe for me as I'm obviously not Chinese. Anything to that?

???? The weather should be excellent at Jiuzhaigou in May.
???? I have no idea why this would be unsafe for either a foreigner or a Chinese. Either this time of year nor any other time of year. Maybe the sister thinks that foreigners are more likely than Chinese to trip and fall on mountains in the month of May. Who knows what's in her head?

The weather prediction is for rain on about half of the days.

I suspect the sister's problem is racism--the people there aren't Han.

Hopefully the rain predictions won't come to pass, but even light rain isn't too much of an impediment if you have a lightweight poncho to toss on. As for the sister's problem, you might be right. The area is traditionally Tibetan but the JZG area has never seen problems like up in Ngawa or Xiahe or Rebkong, plus many of the JZG locals are engaged in the tourist industry. At any rate, the Han influx of residents has been considerable so you have to work a bit harder or go a bit farther away from the Park to see larger conglomerations of Tibetans.

But people there are Han. They are everywhere in China.

In fact, with people not being Han and you not being Chinese it is better. When my friend visited Xinjiang and people found out he was American-Chinese they were much more friendly.

Yeah, I got to the heart of it. That was the issue--they're not Han so they must be barbarians. No real reason to be afraid.

No worries about safety unless it is worry about being crushed by the sheer number of tourists you will be walking down the mountain with.

The vivid colors just was amazing.

Have a good time.

Crushed is right. The press of the crowd boarding the initial bus was great enough that a water bottle in my pack cracked. Our rain gear ended up with about 8oz of water in it!

The vivid colors just was amazing.

Have a good time.
More sun would have really helped the colors.

Couldn't find one with metal spikes, but barb wire should work.
