Weihai, definitely interesting to poke around for a couple of days. And it's always been a bit of a pain to get to. Being able to use HSR to get to Yantai or Rongcheng, thence a short 1+ hr bus ride to Weihai, will make things easier.

I am waiting to see the Shanghai to Kunming high speed train later this month (apparently). The Shanghai to Xi'An high speed train that recently started was also a nice addition.

Thanks for additional info on the high speed G departure that doesn't involve a transfer, though it might not work timing-wise for everyone. BTW one interesting loop route out of Beijing for anybody who's got a week, is Beijing > Weihai > ferry to Dalian > Dandong > Beijing. Slightly more time and you can put Qingdao in there on the way out and Shenyang on the way back. A different sort of China trip from the usual. However, it's a trip best done in warmer weather months.
