Why no duty free in Beijing?

Any idea why they are prohibiting duty free alcohol on flights out of Beijing?

All liquids are banned on US carrier flights from China.

(Including, curiously, Hong Kong SAR; learned that the hard way when trying to buy some baijiu on my way home.)

To be clear, this only applies to carry on luggage, right? Liquids in checked bags are OK (as long as they're not flammable/otherwise not allowed on a plane)?

Correct. You just can't bring it into the cabin with you, even though you bought past security. Note if you fly a non-US carrier this doesn't apply.

I've seen the same practice on flights from Japan to the US. In both cases, enforcement seems to be sporadic.

The policy only pertains to US bound flights, and is not unique to Beijing or specific airlines.

By whom?

Is this a TSA policy? If so, why China and why only US carriers?

Several years ago, the US had a blanket ban on liquids on incoming flights. Many airports in Asia continue to enforce this policy, albeit sporadically.

This only applies to US carrier flights. I fly MU frequently and have no problems.

As this topic is not Delta-specific I am moving the thread to the FT China Forum.
Please continue to follow this discussion there.
