Where are you going to be in Shenzhen? (Its east-west breadth is on par with a small European country.) SZX would NOT be on my list unless you are flying out of there.

If you've never been in China before, then it's worth experiencing Shenzhen for what it is: the face of Modern China. All that in about 30 years.
Lots of good food at good prices from all over China in Shenzhen. But apart from the food and the experience itself, there's nothing particular I'd send you off to see on a brief trip. A Chinese Walmart, maybe? Dafen, the fake painting village? It's right behind Walmart.

Shenzhen is a city with less than 40 years history. Once you are in the city and if you knew 40 years ago it was only a small village with maybe 10 thousand population, that will amaze you.
There is nothing historical in the city, so apart from eating, eating and eating, there is nothing you could really do there.
BUT, it is nice to visit, just enjoy the nice hotel, shops and restaurants.

In other news, the food is awesome.

Shenzhen..the most Walmarts in any Chinese city. 12
Probably more suppliers to Walmart than any city in the world.
Wow..Apple and Walmart..lots of money to ShenZhen
Should build 20' tall bronze statues of Steve Jobs and Sam Walton at LoHu border crossing.
Too bad Steve never made a trip to see Foxconn ShenZhen and of course enjoy the great variety of food ShenZhen has to offer.

All these people must have lived and worked in some sort of houses back in 1977. Where are these houses now?

Local food is Cantonese, like Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
But the real point of Shenzhen is that it's a city of immigrants from all over China, so whatever local Chinese cuisine you want, you can find it in Shenzhen. Also, Shenzhen's a relatively rich region, so it attracts first-quality chefs from throughout China.
That's why just about everyone here discussing Shenzhen points you to food.

Dafen Oil Painting Village is a nice half-day diversion. Easily accessible via the metro. Exit the Dafen metro station, walk past the Wal-Mart, then around to the left.
