At the moment, I'd probably fly SHA - HKG on KA, combining some HK and Shenzhen meetings into the trip and take HSR from Shenzhen to Guangzhou.
Once the Kowloon terminus is finished, it's a no brainer taking HSR from there if no reasonable night train options from Shanghai and the Yangtze delta.

If you fly, why not SHA to SZX or CAN?

Flying into HKG on KA is a lot more civilized than anything to SZX or CAN though I almost like Shenzhen Airlines, and if you have to do meetings in both HK and SZ, it's pretty much the same time wise. This week, I'm flying into HK and out of SZ (no backtracking).

Seems that the China railway big bosses have been reading this forum. It was announced that for January to March, there will be some overnight bullet trains (with sleepers) between Shanghai and Guangzhou and Shanghai and Shenzhen as well as Beijing-Guangzhou and Beijing-Shenzhen. Seems to be a temporary measure for the Chinese new year.

More news about this overnight train from Guangzhou to Shanghai and Beijing.
The beds are 10cm wider. Each has an individual TV screen, power outlet, individual control of AC, etc.
This train is supposedly just for the Chinese new year period and can only be booked 30 days ahead. But I wonder what they will do with these trains afterwards.

What do sleepers cost on the same trains? While I have no problem with second class on day trains, I can't fathom the idea of enduring such overnight (did that drill when I was 19... never again). I shall also note that airfares are really low right now; Y500 all in is widely available.

Hard seat ticket for these 50 hours costs 433 yuan 5 jiao. They are sold, and apparently people buy them. Worse, Z138 seems not to have intermediate option of hard sleeper: it is either these 50 hours in a hard seat, or shell out 1301 yuan 5 jiao for soft sleeper upper bunk.
