Someone posted above... and my last week experience.

www.gmail.com will not work in China. If you use IMAP (for iphone, mac, pc, windows laptop) you will not face any major connection issue, the mails take some time to download but it is still fine.

use VPN if you want to use the web interface. Some pretty good options there.

Thanks..

I use gmail via thunderbird (which uses IMAP) and it works fine but the web interface is a bust.

However any web site that has any google APIs, even FlyerTalk, won't work or will work very slowly and spottily in Shanghai.

It's something web developers should consider if they want access to the Chinese market. Not all ads are the same.

Just get a VPN. It costs anywhere from 5$ to 10$ per month.

killwall.com is a VPN that only costs 100rmb per year, which is far cheaper than others. The website is all in Chinese and support is only offered via a forum.

For folks there permanently (or extended basis) that works. For folks traveling there occasionally not so much.

Ok, so I cannot access Gmail at all on my computer. It barely barely works. Even on VPN. Anyone else having these issues? VPN in China....

Note - works ok on my phone, just not conducive to normal emails..

Google has good days and bad days in China (phones usually better than PCs), but as been said before, it's not really possible to function without a VPN in China any more if you are at all reliant upon Google apps (even gmail) or simply prefer Google searches/maps to Baidu/Bing/etc. LBS services can be particularly troubling if you're a droid user because switching to Baidu isn't easy.

In the past it's always worked for me even in an internet cafe.

Today, though, nothing Google would come up at all until I turned on the VPN. It's working pretty well through the VPN, though.

Get a "good" VPN, not one that is blocked in China.

Recently, I've had trouble with Gmail over IMAP on China Unicom. Astrill VPN (probably the most expensive one) works flawlessly. I found out that when using the Zhejiang University network with other VPNs they would block them after a day. I'm using Windows Phone on mobile and Mac OS on the laptop, and Astrill's proprietary StealthVPN is great.

Sounds like it's my VPN? I in the past (ie 6 months ago) could get it to work on VPN. Now no more. I'm using my company's.

Followup: The blocking of all things google is so extensive that recaptcha doesn't work. They also just started blocking Yahoo search results. Bing works, though. (Microsoft is playing ball with the Chinese government, a Chinese version of Bing shows up but since I enter queries in English it offers me All/English/Chinese results.)

Gmail has been completely blocked for past 5 days or so (lots of news about this). At the risk of beating a dead horse, a VPN is an absolute necessity if you fancy remaining productive. Sure, the gmail thing is temporary, but 5 days is too long to go without. Plus, even when it works, many ancillary features do not.
