More than 2,800 dead pigs found in Chinese river

According to Xinmin newspaper, 2,813 pigs were fished out of the Huangpu River, which provides drinking water for Shanghai's 23 million people, on Sunday and Monday.

I guess pigs can't swim either.

Chinese authorities said they found more than 3,300 dead pigs in a river that supplies water to Shanghai.

It's being reported on news.sina.com/cn so folks behind the great fire wall of cn and/or vpn setup do have access, I think, to these news.

Bottomline, SH officials are tell'g the official stories that they are aware, been sampling the water and increased cholrine treatment, and found it relatively safe for (human ?) consumption in accordance to established national standards set forth within CN (whatever those are ...) For real, huh.

Mind you, industrial pollution & indiscriminate dumping of toxic discharges, untreated into the river has been ongoing all along, in feeder rivers & streams and further inland. The source(s) of the the dead pigs had been traced to Jiaxing southwest of SH, upstream from the river that eventually feed into the East China Sea in the Pacific. - tested & identified - and said to be due to extreme cold (really) and not disease, thus - not to worry.

Some of its own net - citizens are calling it hog wash, rubb-ish, white lies with wide open eyes, and so forth.

Checking the weather records/history for the region, there're just 4 days with the night temps dipping below 32 degree F or 0 degree C, day time has been in the 40's and 50's to 60's. Ditto for temps in SH in the past 30+ days.

http://news.sina.com.cn/c/2013-03-11/181726498962.shtml

Partial translations of above news clip taken directly from Sina - "apparently, the dumping has been ongoing & not really new - 10,078 this Jan. and 8,325 in Feb. and an average of 300 daily in March thus far. "

So, what happened to the rest of the dead pigs that got dumped? Is it safe? How safe is it really? If you believe & trust the testing, then - I guess, the stories told - well - do fly, and, so can hogs ...

Not

Does it really matter? 600 billion tons of fish poop in the river.....600000 dead salmon in a river...it is a natural thing, and not the first time.

As always the main concern for local authorities is stability, not solving or clarifying the issue as such.

The latest number is about 6600+ and still counting. I am not local but have heard lots about it for the last couple of days from local media in Taiwan.

Those pigs all died from illness and were dumped from Jiaxing, Zhejiang (浙江省嘉興市). No matter what the authorities say, if my drinking water were from the river "shared" with those dead pigs , I would be extremely worried myself.

Read what NYT reported 2 days ago: China: Dead Pigs in River Near 6,000

I believe they all had been consumed by the innocent folks.

So what? Tap in China is never "drinking water " as Laowai tend to think...should feel lucky that the Gov didn't charge extra for 排骨汤-;)

If it looks good, eat it ??????? Urrrh, not so sure up in mainland.

Extended family visiting this past week with relatives in Guangzhou apparently considered things as being business as usual - dining out - (uploaded on FB page,) it looked good and they ate it. They have access to non-censored news out of Hong Kong and fully awared of what's going on.

Being quietly whispered, not all the dead pigs ended up in the river and/or got disposed of as required and had already infiltrated the food distribution chains.

Stayed away from smoked pork and sausages, canned goods would be highly suspected as possibly coming from tainted sources.

The official party stance - authorities continued to insist that the floating debris are being dealt with, filtration & treatment plants are monitoring and national standards being maintained, yada yada

What matters is what one choose to believe in ... There is apparently another one about dead fish floating in the river, lots & lots of them - blamed on toxic, cancer-causing industrial pollutants dumped directly into the streams, untreated.

Harmony and stability are given priority until the spring Party gatherings in Beijing are over. Then these and other enviromental issues are maybe being looked into, first and foremost from the viewpoint of internal security and stability.

China river's dead pig toll passes 13,000 but officials say water quality is 'normal'

More than a week since authorities in Shanghai started pulling thousands of dead pigs from one of the city’s major waterways, the Huangpu River, municipal authorities in that city of 23 million are continuing to pull hundreds of carcasses from its waterways each day, bringing the total since last week to over 13,000.

best spin

On the english CCTV , they said the reason why; is that the dead animal compost sites are full due to the increase in dead pigs caused by the cold winter.....
