Harbin itinerary for a 3 day visit.

I am currently in Shenyang and I always try to visit at least one other city on my visits. I also love to travel by train and seeing that Harbin is only a short four hour D train trip it fits in well with my schedule. I am looking for some advice on whether Harbin is worth a visit this time of year and if there are enough places of interest to spend three days there. Any help on a suggested itinerary would be much appreciated.

Harbin is interesting for a brief visit. The Russian architecture--see the center of town along the pedestrian area, also the onion-domed old Cathedral (now a museum with some fascinating photos inside). A lot of people like the Siberian tiger park though I personally won't go. And for the darker side, there is the old WW2 complex where the Japanese had an infamous experimentation camp.

If you can swing the timing, a visit up to the Hulunbeir grasslands (access via city of Hailaer) for a couple of days might be very worthwhile....though I expect in early May it will still be pretty chilly and especially at night. Maybe swing by Harbin for a day before continuing onward. If you perchance are returning to/connecting through Beijing, you can fly there directly from Hailaer.
