Transferring through CAN

Hi all. Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm traveling ICN-CAN-SYD, one way, this week. I'll be on China Southern Airlines. I know I will not need a visa to make the transfer, but will I:

a) need any other documentation?
b) need to re-check my bags?

I transferred through CAN once before (also on China Southern), and there was a strange episode in which I received several stink-eyes, my passport was taken, and I had to wait in the corner with the other bad children. Did I screw up? If possible, I'd like to avoid a similar procedure this time.

Thanks for your help! Happy trails to all.

Welcome to Flyertalk!

Much information about transiting in CAN is found in this thread and the thread linked there:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/china...hours-can.html

a) you won't need anything else but your passport
b) you baggage should be checked through to your final destination, but you'll find out as soon as you check in ...

You need to go through transit immigration (your passport is stamped) and exit China again. No problem, transfer takes less than 1h. You must not leave the airport (apparently).

You'll have to go through transit immigration, there should be a special desk for this so look for the sign. At other Chinese airports, leaving the airport on a long-enough international transit, even without a visa, is OK. However, recent information suggests that CAN is trying out a different policy, where you will be sent back airside after transit immigration desk, and not allowed to leave the airport without a Chinese visa. We need more data points on the current CAN transit-without-visa situation, so if you have a long layover and try to leave the airport, please report back on what you experienced. Thanks in advance.

I believe CAN does auto-transfer international connecting luggage, definitely inquire at time of check-in and see how your bags are tagged. If CAN is implementing a policy that sends you back airside, you can't get to your luggage, so a pickup and recheck situation would be incompatible.

a. You will need a copy of your itinerary and an onward boarding pass
b. No, if your bag was checked through.

And also, welcome to FlyerTalk.
