Transfer AA to KE at ORD - Missed connection?

I'm about to buy a ticket from Orbitz or Expedia that begins with AA from MIA to ORD - arrival at 9:30 a.m. - and departure from ORD on KE at 11:20 a.m - March, 2010. (I'm connecting in ICN for REP.)

What would happen if the American Airlines Flight is delayed (it's happened before from MIA to ORD) and I missed the Korean Air connection? - Does KE have to put me on the next flight(s) to my destination, without additional charge?

I'm new to FlyerTalk so hopefully I'm posting in the correct forum.

Thanks!

Welcome to FT.

I believe Korean uses T5 (intl) at ORD so your transfer will likely take 30-45 minutes as it involves the airport train and then a trip back through security. You have almost 2 hours, so you will most likely be fine.

Assuming this is all on one ticket, which it sounds like it is. And, as long as it is a legal connection, which it also is. It is the responsibility of the airline that messes you up to deal with the situation. So, if your AA flight is late it will be up to them to get you to your destination.

Since you're on a morning flight, there are likely many options. However most Asian flights leave in the morning, and the lastest I could find quickly was a UA connection at NRT that leaves ORD at 12:03, this might in turn get you into ICN too late for your connection. In any case, this is only 30 minutes later than your original flight, and the odds of getting AA to rebook you onto the UA flight in that amount of time are low. All this means that you would possibly need to overnight at ORD, but don't fret overly. 2 hours is a generous connection time, and you will probably be just fine.

A general rule is to get your plans changed when things go sour as early in the process as possible. So, if your flight from MIA is obviously going to leave late you should start to try to get rebooked there. In the early morning at MIA there will be more ways to get you to ICN - via connections out of the west coast for example, than there will be if you wait until you're at ORD.

But, in any case it will be AAmerican's problem.

Thanks! I finally decided on another connection that will be better yet, at the same price - I'm flying from MIA (home) to ATL on AA and connecting to KE there. I have from midnight to almost noon for that connection. I have a place to stay in Atlanta, so that's not a problem.
