Sun AM news shows: Kelly was on Fox News - seems to be sharing a lot of info around not if but when and how - wondering why none of this is being taken an action via congressional committees vs just his team.
U.S. might ban laptops on all flights into and out of the country
SNIPPET
The United States might ban laptops from aircraft cabins of all flights into and out of the country, John Kelly, Secretary of Homeland Security, said on Sunday.
In an interview on Fox News Sunday Kelly said the U.S. plans to "raise the bar" on airline security, including tightening screening of carry-on items.
"That's the thing that they are obsessed with, the terrorists, the idea of knocking down an airplane in flight, particularly if it's a U.S. carrier, particularly if it's full of U.S. people."

Another quote from the Reuters article:
Does that first sentence mean domestic flights too?
The second sentence is more fodder for critics of this "security theater" approach that DHS has adopted.
Asked whether the government would expand such measures nationwide, Kelly said: "We might, and likely will."
On Friday Kelly told Fox News that if most people knew the extent of the security threat to the United States some people would "never leave the house."

"The TSA has begun testing certain new procedures at a limited number of airports, requiring people to remove additional items from carry-on bags for separate screenings."
See my post a few back for more on this program.

Moderator's Note:
The first sentence is immediately following the sentence below, so it would seem to refer to that rather than a laptop ban. It would include domestic.
"The TSA has begun testing certain new procedures at a limited number of airports, requiring people to remove additional items from carry-on bags for separate screenings."

Reuters is reporting the John Kelly, Trump's DHS appointee, is once again talking about a complete laptop ban in carry-on.

...and, as usual, no explanation about why putting terrorist bombs, and big Li-ion batteries, in the cargo hold will make flying any safer.
As is usually the case with Adminstration officials, his comments made no sense: After noting that the ban would include flights going into and out of the US, he said, "That's the thing that they are obsessed with, the terrorists, the idea of knocking down an airplane in flight, particularly if it's a U.S. carrier, particularly if it's full of U.S. people."
...OK so then why not also ban them on domestic flights? If they can put a bomb in a laptop in BOS, they could just as easily take it on a flight to MIA or LAX, probably hit an even larger % of American pax.
I have lots of international travel coming up later this year and I'm getting really irritated with Washington, who are messing with our ability to make plans by sending so many mixed, conflicting, and nonsensical signals.

Do these idiots in DHS even understand the concept that no one wants to bomb aircraft anymore. There are far more effective and easier targets. ISIS, al-Qaeda, etc have no reason to target aircraft. They can just target the TSA checkpoint, which DHS/TSA continue to make even better targets with their stupidity.

If this goes into effect for all international flights departing the US then those of us who have to take a connecting flight with a layover to the int'l departure city will be without our devices on the domestic portion as they will have to be put in the luggage at the start of our journey. I seriously doubt the US carriers will implement a policy of gate checking devices upon boarding a large aircraft heading oversees. Can you imagine trying to box up and gate check electronic devices from over 300 passengers? Not going to happen.

They probably do, late at night when the uniforms come off and they are far away from their Chicken Little puppetmasters. But on the job they are stuck in a "race to the bottom" environment wherein anyone who doesn't froth at the mouth in fear at the sight of a soda can or "electronic device" is considered unpatriotic and not of any use. These mindsets happen sometimes in gov't and they tend to fizzle out sooner or later (anyone remember Joe McCarthy?) but we lack leaders strong enough to penetrate the Security Theater veneer. Also remember a lot of people are making money from this madness.

Are we talking international flights even to, say, the Caribbean? Canada? And did they ever mention lead time between announcement and implementation?
