Double security at SJO

On Sunday, 12/15/15, I flew UA from SJO to EWR. I underwent security inspection via the Fast Track and went to my gate after passing passport check. At my gate was a snack bar where I purchased a small bottle of watermelon juice.
In the jetway was a surprise second security check where all beverages were confiscated. I'm disappointed that the airport or UA didn't inform me of this local rule. I inquired of the screener if this was for all flights leaving SJO or just those USA bound but he spoke little English and I speak almost no Spanish.
Just a little headsup from a gate agent and I would have consumed the juice at the gate. Security collected quite a haul from my flight.

This is very common on US bound flights.

That's the norm for many central america-US flights, not a surprise.

IME, as a regular traveller to SJO, the cashier will almost always remind you at the time of purchase that drinks cannot be taken on board flights to the US. Maybe it was someone's first day.
