SFO TSA screeners arrested on allegations of drug smuggling, conspiracy

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) - Two security screeners at San Francisco International Airport were arrested and arraigned Friday on charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and accepting a bribe from a third suspect, who is also in federal custody.

All three defendants have been charged with conspiracy to distribute meth, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years to life in prison and fines up to $10 million.

Looks like we'll have some permanent openings at SFO.

Are you sure that these are TSA employees? IIRC SFO is one of the few airports that has private screeners, but I could be wrong here.

They're Covenant Security employees under contract to the TSA.

Yep... So, these contractor bad apples in no way reflect upon the fine work of 60,000 clerks on the government payroll (or something like that).

I don't think the media grasps that these are not TSA employees. This is from the San Jose Mercury News:

The two Transportation Security Administration employees -- 30-year-old Claudio Rene Sunux and 27-year-old Amanda Lopez -- were arrested on Friday, along with 28-year-old Anibal Giovanni Ramirez. The trio were arraigned Friday on charges of bribery and drug smuggling, U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag and the FBI said.

Impressive police work but makes you wonder how many smuggling conspiracies are undetected.

Don't the airports with private screeners still have some TSA staff in admin and "oversight" positions?

SFO uses contract employees for screening. Does Covenant also provide the BD"O"s for SFO or are they TSA employees?

The oversight probably exists....on paper.

Just like TSA 'oversight' at airports that are TSA-staffed. 'Oversight' is camera film that can't be found.

It's that great oversight that's resulted in people walking away from the checkpoint before screening is complete. If there were adequate 'oversight' we wouldn't be getting terminal dumps because all the spare LTSOs and STSOs standing around chatting and checking their phones didn't 'see something' and 'say something'.
