Who's watching the watchers? (DHS Inspector arrested for soliciting child sex)

You just have to wonder!

Homeland Security official arrested in sting involving sordid Sacramento Craigslist ad (Sacramento Bee, 6 Aug 2014) - in part:

A Homeland Security employee has been arrested in connection with a sting that alleges he used a Craigslist ad in an effort to get a mother and an underage daughter to have sex with him.

George Hristovski, 54, of Elverta, was booked into Sacramento County Jail on Monday after his arrest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His LinkedIn posting identifies him as an inspector for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2014/08/06/660...#storylink=cpy

Video from local TV Channel KCRA - 3 here.

(Yes, the name can be mentioned; his name is in the media, the online booking information and has been charged with federal child pornography charges.)

George had some increasingly lurid correspondence with - a Sheriff posing. And George says that if the correspondence with the putative young girl had gone farther, he'd have contacted the authorities. Soooo believable! I doubt his wife and child believe him... and though he may not have been found guilty in a court of law (yet), I don't either.

I do not think the majority of DHS or related agency folks are pathological like this, but I have to ask, who's watching the watchers?

People who live in glass houses shouldn't stow thrones.

I'm sure he had a background check and all those mean news sites are just posting lies. Otherwise, of what value is a TSA/DHS background check = above suspicion?

I guess a company that can't keep its info secure also isn't capable of doing background checks.

The most likely thing is that he's never done such a thing or getting arrested before employment at TSA, that's why such a thing would not show up in background checks.

Baloney. He's done this before, several times I would wager. He's got a superiority complex, which is commonly found in TSA employees.

While exercising sound judgment and performing passive observation, I engage in voluntary encounters with the public under the SPOT Program, to determine whether observed or elevated behaviors indicate that the individual may be involved in harmful activities related to transportation systems. Analyzed behaviors exhibited by passengers and determine the next course of action. If additional screening is required, it is accomplished through casual conversation, selectee screening and/or law enforcement officer (LEO) referral. Assessed multiple individuals simultaneously and defined methods used to detect unusual behavior. Developed baseline data, to include identifying the flight destination, understanding the anticipated composition of travelers associated with the flight, behaviors to be expected, and deviations from those behaviors. Identified behaviors, documented and used those behaviors as the basis for referrals. Prepared and submitted incident reports when law enforcement was involved. Ensured superiors were aware of all ongoing activities.

Perhaps since he was hired by the TSA as a BDO, he knows how to cover up all those "tells" that the TSA claims they can detect.

The government sometimes....maybe many times....does things that make one just shake your head. A few years ago my agency had a senior personnel manager, who also happened to have a top secret clearance, arrested at work by the FBI for having and distributing child pornography. So they haul him and his work computer out of the building and I get called on the carpet by the front office since somewhere along the line I'd been assigned the vague extra duty job of Internet Security Officer. Of course I knew nothing about his extracurricular activities as our computer system had a very robust and restrictive firewall against employees trying to access forbidden web sites. Heck eBay and for awhile even Facebook were blocked. Anybody trying to access a forbidden site would get what we called the "Red Screen of Death" with a warning and a notice that a report was being sent to management and I'd never seen any reports from the system on him. As it turned out he hadn't tried to access any forbidden sites from work and no pornography was stored on his work computer. Also turned out that unbeknown to us the FBI had been watching this guy for years and had even let his security clearance be renewed so as not to tip their hand. Last I heard he'd been sentenced to 15 years in Federal prison. Left hand has no idea sometimes what the right hand is doing.

Looks like they missed an opportunity to deal with this TSA employee back in 2009:

Based on the purported e-mail exchanges, investigators obtained warrants for records held by Craigslist and Yahoo. The records showed that the e-mail used in the exchanges belonged to Hristovski - and had been used to post sexual ads five times between July and October 2009, the FBI affidavit states.

The FBI said the Internet protocol address used to post the ads from 2009 was owned by the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA, and that the picture on Hristovski's LinkedIn profile is the same one sent in exchanges with the undercover agent.

More info in the Chronicle article linked above. Nice that they have computers available at work for employees to use.

From the link above:

"TSA holds its employees to the highest ethical standards and expects all TSA employees to conduct themselves with integrity and professionalism," said spokesman Ross Feinstein.
Ross, you really need to lose that line. If the TSA did hold its employees "to the highest ethical standards.....", its work force would be cut in half.

TSA needs an office devoted to trolling the internet and disciplining employees who post comments like:

I say let people take whatever they like!!! And let whatever happen.....happen!!! What we do is so comical..... It'll be so funny to see horrible things happen to the folks who think we are just a bunch of clowns!
as posted on TSA Funnies FB page or

"That was my friend u crappy piece of ....! Who the .... are u to judge the way we pay our respects to a fellow OFFICER ... wipe? He gave years of his life to that job and and for that he should be acknowledged. So .... you and your opinion."
as posted on TSANews blog.

Sadly, when TSA employees post using foul language, insults or wishes for "horrible things" to happen to passengers, it does NOTHING for your agency's
already poor image with the public.

Should the TSA begin to clamp down on these types of postings, then maybe we will believe that you hold your employees to high ethical standards.

While amusing, that's possibly a bad choice of words there...
