Interestingly, when my husband followed me through the PreCheck lane last week (it was confusingly labeled PreCheck, elite, and active duty military), they asked for his military ID, scanned it, it came up good, and he was allowed through the WTMD old style - no shoes off or laptop out. So apparently some airports are doing this already?

In the airports I've used when I was allowed to use the pre-check line, there is generally an initial lane (sometimes for elites and military or as in LAS gate D for fc) one is then funneled (if selected) into the pre-check line.
Wasn't his bp also scanned? Are you sure that it was his military ID and not his bp which allowed him to use pre-check?

Looks like it happened back in May.

And yes, it was definitely his ID that was scanned.

TSA does this right now at two airports-- DCA and SEA.

People say there is no background check as such on a member of the military, but I thought a five time felon with Diamond Elite status could go through Pre if he or she was a US citizen and a US resident.

You don't even have to be a permanent resident to get PreCheck-- you just need a frequent flyer account with a US address. The frequent flyer account must meet the ordinary PreCheck requirements, of course, but getting PreCheck through frequent flyer status does not take into account personal circumstances. So, yes, felons not on a TIDE list should be able to get PreCheck.
