I believe that an overwhelming response has crashed the site. Word is getting out.

That's what it looks like. After and unusually long connection period (following multiple failed attempts), this message finally came up:

<duplicate of above>

How much personal info do they want to create an account for this site so you can sign the petition? Just a valid email, or more?

I really don't want my name, postal address, or regular email account ending up on Obama's campaign donation list (or that of his successor, or predecessor), which is what I suspect might happen from signing up for an account at whitehouse.gov.

Can't get the page to load. But I don't think it's legit. "wwws" is not a conventional URL prefix, and there's no pretext on earth for the White House to be gatherin petition signatures for this or any other cause. Be very careful about supplying personal information to this site -- I think it's a phishing expedition.

Its legitimate. I just got to the petition going through www.whitehouse.gov

And while it was spinning its wheels, my browser said "Waiting for wwws.whitehouse.gov"

I was skeptical at first as well, but now am not.

Also 2,648 signatures as of 30 seconds ago.

if you go to www.whitehouse.gov and click through to the petitions pages, it directs you to pages with wwws. prefixes.

ETA: yeah, what the guy above me said!
