In 2017, at the first renewal of the 2016 Chase Sapphire Reserve card,* no retention offers have been forthcoming. It appears that Chase is not offering retention bonuses on this card at this time, and will cancel the card at the cardholders request without further ado.
*A retention offer has been reported (though it's minimal): https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/28917524-post376.html
Posts 333 and 327 discuss a fee credit issued by Chase when cancelling the card. These have been called both "Annual Fee Refund" and "Membership Fee Credit."
This thread discusses the timing of both cancelling and product changing (downgrading to Sapphire Preferred) in order to 1) Keep from paying the $450 annual fee, and 2) possibly get a 2018 $300 travel credit before cancelling.
The rules changed for the travel credit on cards issued in May 2017, making the travel credit a calendar year issuance rather than a Dec statement to Dec Statement issuance.
The nuances discussed within this thread include changing your billing date, fees posting on the 1st of the month, and the 30 day window to cancel/60 day window to product change.

On a product change, doesn't the card number stay the same? Wouldn't the points stay with the card number? If not, is there any grace period to transfer points?

I meant to to type CFU. The numbers stay same. I just transferred my points to ink plus since they are 1.25 value with ink plus.

Just a DP. I activated the bonus category for July-Sept for chase freedom and it shows I earned 5% on my previous dining charges with CSR card. Basically I double dipped. I earned 3% with CSR and now 5% freedom on the same charges lol.

I combine points (if any) once a month when the statement closes from (2) Ink Cash & (2) Freedoms to CSP.
When my Fairmont changes next week I'll get a CFU and combine those once a month (if any) as well.
I don't see any point not to have them combined where they can be transferred as needed.

I should have been clearer in my question about a grace period for transferring points. If one changes from Sapphire Reserve to another product (Freedom or Freedom Unlimited, for example), do the points in the Sapphire Reserve account transfer to the new card? If not, does the card holder have a period of time in which to transfer the points manually?

Mine will charge on 10/01/2017 as well. I plan on renewing this year since I recently switched jobs and my new employer requires me to go through a 4 month training course in a different city. During this time, I'm paying for the hotel and getting reimbursed. Should have around 8k in hotels charged to my card during this time period, so definitely worth it.

Previous points balance .......... 0
+ Points transferred from other product ........ <the residual points in CSP before conversion>
+ 1.5% (1.5 Pts)/$1 earned on all purchases
+ Bonus points from Shop through Chase
= Total points available for redemption
The expiration date on the new card was three years from the month of conversion. Everything else remained the same: account number, credit limit, closing date.

Annual fee credit
After I PC changed my CSR to chase freedom, I got an annual fee credit for 37.50. I think that's for a month.
