Verizon recurring payments don't count for 5x on ink?!

I noticed that my monthly spend on VZ was being treated as miscellanious and only getting 1pt/$. On a nearly 400 dollar/month bill that's 1600 points per month that I am missing. So I contacted chase about this and they responded as follows:
Thank you for contacting Chase about earning reward points
for transactions on your account.

The rewards adjustment you requested cannot be made
because the merchant is not in an eligible category. Let
me explain, Visa and MasterCard systems assign a category
code to each merchant, based on the kinds of products and
services they sell. Sometimes the system places merchants
in a generalized category, like "superstores" instead of
"grocery stores" or "gas stations."

Since the merchant in question was not assigned an
appropriate category, your purchases did not qualify for
this reward.
Anyone else run into this? I feel rather cheated, to be honest. i know that some locations are listed under various codes, but surely after all this time VZ is squarely in the utilities category?

I am getting 5X for my Verizon wireless payments. I pay it manually each month and it is coded as utilities on my statement.

So I must be one of the only people having this problem. It is aggravating that they won't fix it.

so now the question is twofold:
why is my account suffering this issue isolatedly?, and
why won't chase fix it when i point it out to them?

Is there any chance you hit the annual limit on this bonus (it's unlikely, I know)?

Both my Verizon Wireless and Verizon FIOS get me 5x points and they're both on auto-pay.

I assume you are paying online thru myverizon? you could try going to a store and paying on the bill payment machine, see if that's any different.

Yep paying online. This is so odd. The quirk of the system I'm not so aggravated about. It's chase's absolute unwillingness to do anything about it when it's clearly an error.

I'd like to avoid having to drive to VZ store with my bills.

Same here. If I get phones on Verizon I will usually have them billed to my account that way I get 5X for phone purchases too.

I made a sizable purchase at the end of December 2013 from Amazon in order to get the 5% bonus. Well the stuff didn't ship until 1/1/2014. I sent the proof of the 2013 order (vs the purchase date) to Chase and their response was essentially "big effing deal. in order to get the bonus points you'll have to get the merchant to rerun the order."
