Are there any AF refund if cancelled within a certain time? Does chase look down upon this practice and should I wait until the AF hits the next year?

You can get a full refund of the AF if you cancel within 60 days of the AF posting. I wouldn't mess with Chase though, they are known to close the accounts of "abusive" customers and then blacklist them. I would wait at least 1 year then cancel to avoid to AF, assuming you don't get enough value to offset that $95.

try for a retention offer when year is up and cancel citing cost of annual fee as reason if no offer is given.

Well that was the easiest 20k points earned. Just a SM and instantly was awarded the points. Had applied right after the 60k promo ended.
