I purchased some shoes from LL Bean with a gift card/CSP and I was awarded bonus points for the entire amount.

No points using UR mall with Marriott Visa

I recently booked a stay via UR mall with Marriott. I had success with a stay giving UR points in July, but not for a stay in August. I used my Chase Marriott visa for both stays. I have been going back and forth with Chase via SM.

Here is the first response:

Thank you for contacting Chase about the rewards program
on your Marriott Rewards® Premier credit card ending with
XXXX.

I have confirmed you earned 9.502 points for the $1,900.24
Boscolo Venezia hotel stay on August XX, 2014. Please
note you do not earn Ultimate Rewards points for purchases
made with your Marriott Rewards Premier credit card. I
appreciate this opportunity to explain how bonus points
are earned.

For each purchase you make using the Chase Marriott
Rewards Premier credit card you earn five points for every
dollar spent on Marriott hotel stays, two points for every
dollar spent on airline, car rental and dining purchases
and one point for every dollar spent on other
transactions. Merchant credits will deduct from the total
point balance.

Points earned during the billing period are transferred to
your account at Marriott Rewards® at the end of each
billing period on the statement date. Please allow three
to five business days from the statement date for the
points to post at Marriott Rewards. For information on
your total point balance or on how to redeem your points
please call Marriott Rewards at 1-800-321-7396 or online
at www.marriottrewards.com.

I replied that I knew I earned MR points with my credit card spend, but I was talking about points earned by using the UR mall. Here is their response:

Thank you for contacting Chase concerning the bonus points
on your Freedom account.

Upon review, I see that the charge for $1,900.24 posted on
your Marriott Premier account. However, in order to earn
the bonus points for any purchases made through the
Ultimate Rewards mall website, the charge should be made
using the Ultimate Rewards credit card, which is your
Freedom account ending in xxxx.

As your Marriott Premier card is not associated with the
Ultimate Rewards feature, your account did not qualify to
earn the bonus points.

I responded again that I used a Chase card and it doesn't specify that I have to use an UR earning card. I got this response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding the Marriott.com
transaction in the amount of $1,900.24.

Our records show you entered the Ultimate Rewards Mall
and made a purchase; however, the purchase did not post to
the account ending in XXXX, XXXX, XXXX, or XXXX, which are
linked to the Ultimate Rewards Mall.

I can confirm the transaction was billed to your Marriott
account ending in XXXX. Since the transaction was not
processed using a credit card that is linked to the
Ultimate Rewards Mall the transaction will not be eligible
for the bonus points.

I would like to be able to further research this matter on
your behalf, please provide a copy of the receipt that was
email to you as confirmation your order was processed.
Please note that we request the receipt to review the
order to see if it qualifies for bonus points per the
merchant?s terms and conditions. Many merchants prohibit
types of items or discounts, and we cannot see this
information from the charge on your account.

Additionally, here are some tips for shopping through the
Chase Rewards Mall:

:-::-::-::-:?Be sure to use your Chase credit card to make a purchase.:-::-::-::-:

?Please go directly from the Chase Rewards Mall to a
participating merchant?s website to earn extra points.
?Check the merchant?s terms and conditions before making a
purchase to find out if you are eligible for extra points.
?Be sure to complete your purchase before you leave the
merchant?s website.
?Only use coupons or promotional codes from the Chase
Rewards Mall; do not use coupons or offers from other
sites.
?Be sure your browser settings are not blocking cookies or
popup windows for participating merchant websites

For more information about the Chase Rewards Mall, please
visit the FAQ link at www.ultimaterewards.com.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

This last response was from Quality Customer Care
Senior Financial Service Specialist.

I am a little confused by this last response. First it says my purchase is not eligible, then to send in the receipts (which I did but have not heard back). Then under tips for using the Chase Rewards Mall I starred that it says to use a Chase credit card---not an UR earning Chase card.

I will update here with final results.

It's great that you received the points. Can you elaborate on why they finally gave you the points, i.e did they agree the purchase was within the terms? or just give you a courtesy adjustment, etc?

There was a lot of back and forth saying that I didn't meet the terms because I did not use an Ultimate Rewards CC to make the charge. They finally gave me a courtesy adjustment when I submitted the receipt and a screenshot of the T &C's they had sent me with an arrow I inserted pointing out the fact that it only said you had to use a Chase CC, not an UR card. They never did answer my question whether the initial reservation tracked through the UR Mall.

Today, for the first time I found myself at "Shop Through Chase" when using the CSP portal. The Freedom portal remains as Ultimate Rewards Mall.

Of curious note to me was language on the STC portal that said bonus points would not be earned on purchases made with a card not associated with the UR program. I ended up using the URM with Freedom card anyway but it got me concerned that I couldn't use my Milage Plus Explorer on the STC portal and earn bonus URs.

Anyone with experience along these lines, please share.

I've used a number of different non UR earnings cards through URM, and gotten points. I don't know if this is consistent, predictable, or might get clawed back. For bigger purchases I do clear cookies, relaunch browsers, take screenshots of tracking screen, save receipts, and use a UR card though.

So far things seem to post quickly.

More recently, Discover has been really enforcing the use of their Discover Deals portal. I've read a few reports of people not getting the bonus points for this, especially in the past couple of months. Has Chase followed suit? In the past few years, I've made many purchases that UR mall and gotten points, has that changed recently?

I'd like to know this as well. I need to make some really large purchases from Lowe's, and the UR mall is paying 3x. I have some charges from March that are showing tacking, but it says:
Note: New transactions may take up to eight weeks to appear on your activity page after the transaction has been billed to your Chase card account.
Looks like default language to me, but I'm guessing they may be looking for a match against the statement.

I tried it once, i purchased a groupon item through chase accidentally, because it was a membership to sams club and the name was required to be the same as the credit card holder...

i got points for it, but it was removed a week afterwards...

Have the CSP, have been using various cards to make Ultimate Reward Mall purchases for years. However, recently had points clawed back for the first time. Spent $40 at RoadRunnerSports on an amex card. The points posted in the Chase Mall, but then a week later were clawed back. I contacted Chase who said "why would you expect to earn bonus points when you didn't use a Chase card?"
I was taken aback by the overall rudeness of the agent (repetitive & non-responsive), and wrote in a complaint. Not about the miles, but about the agent. Also asked for the miles to be posted and was told no.

Just received 2x bonus on UR from homedepot.com for using a Home Depot gift card as payment. It was a $50 dollar purchase.

Just wondering if anyone else has data point whether using non-chase card to make purchase at UR mall will earn UR points?

Why not try some other card and let us know how it goes?
