Wanted to add a few data points.
1 - My wife applied for a CSP in early July. At the time her credit report was only showing 4 open accounts in the last two years, one of which was a store card from 22 months ago. She had 2 more accounts opened at the time, but they were recent enough that they weren't showing on the report yet, though one was a Chase UR card. She put me as an AU on the application. She didn't get auto approved and the letter that came a week later was a denial for too many open accounts. We didn't recon line it. I'm wondering if they were able to see the non-reported cards (traditional thinking here says 4 should have been ok) or if they came down harder with me as an AU (I have way too many open accounts)?
2 - I applied for a Marriott card at the end of July. At the time I had 10 open accounts in the last 2 years, including 2 personal (both opened since mid-April) and 1 business with Chase. Was auto-approved.
Both my wife and I have excellent credit - hers is even 20-30 points higher than mine.

For those keeping score, some 10 HPs in 6 months, probably 7 or 8 with EXP, 2 or 3 with TU. FICO runs from 785 to 825 depending on which source you consult and which CB they claim to check with. 6 figure income, @6 year history with Chase. Chase cards currently open: Freedom, UA, BA, IHG, with TCCL of $19K. Last Chase app was instantly approved for the UA card in March 2015.
For the first time in a while, I didn't get an instant approval, nor even a request to call in. I got this:
"Thanks for applying.
We need to review your application a little longer.
We'll let you know our decision in writing as soon as we can. If we approve your application, you'll receive your card in the mail in 7-10 business days. Please don't resubmit your application.
Thanks for choosing Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card ."
Called the automated line, which said they are considering my app, and they will let me know in 2 weeks, which according to the wiki is supposed to be a good sign. Better than reading tea leaves I guess.
It's my understanding I'm better off just waiting and not calling Recon, right?

She got the exact same online message, and automated response, that I did. So with any luck, 4 nights in top of the line Marriotts coming up.

I've updated the wiki to add links to separate discussion threads/wikis for various Chase personal & business cards.

Since I probably won't know my result before the 80K offer expires, DW also applied a few minutes ago. She has same total household income of course, probably a couple fewer HPs in 6 months. She has the same Chase cards as I do, except her CSP is still open.

I applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card card tonight and got the same exact message you did.
On another note, the girl I am seeing is 23yo, only has one CC, and was automatically approved for $15k last week for the Sapphire Preferred Card.
I don't need a $25k limit on my BA card so I am hoping to offer to decrease that limit if they will approve my Sapphire application should they call me or decline it.

@BigTravelSmallMoney, just want to make sure, you did get confirmation from the CBs that the CRs had been updated to reflect your dispute, before applying for CSP, right?
I also recently disputed to remove me as AU from a couple cards. I found the process painless - all done online with a few clicks. Didn't seem like it mattered whether you already got the free annual copy, but perhaps b/c I wasn't looking specifically. Interestingly TU completed it in 2 days (amazing), while EX still no communication after 8 days.

For Equifax: I'm not sure why, but when I tried to submit a dispute without a credit report already the form just wouldn't work and we had already done our annual credit reports in December 2014. Luckily, I used this FCRA link for Equifax and used "Unemployed Free Credit File (not denied)" since my husband was currently unemployed, but he was also eligible for a free CR due to "Denied Credit, Insurance, Change in Credit Limit or Other Benefit" (from the CSP application) and since our retirement account agency was compromised recently (lucky us) we were also eligible for "Believe You May Be a Victim of Fraud Free Credit File (not denied)". After getting the Equifax report, we were able to dispute from that report. I disputed Equifax and they processed everything within 10-15 days - we got the notification immediately since we did it online.
Experian was a different animal: we weren't able to find an online form to get him his free credit report eligible from FCRA and they wouldn't allow him through the Dispute form process so we were stuck. Luckily, because of the compromise above, the agency was offering ProtectMyId and we were able to enroll my husband in ProtectMyId for free which gave him an Experian report and were able to dispute from there (although we had to call in the dispute). Because it wasn't online, though, we would've had to wait for the papers to come in. We waited 10-15 days for Experian to process the dispute to see if that was enough time but it obviously wasn't.
The Experian report was the only one that wasn't processed by the time we had applied to the CSP and apparently was the one Chase was looking at. But we were in a rush to get the card so I'm happy we were able to pressure the rep into giving us the card (FYI: all of the AU accounts we were disputed were Chase accounts, so they could have looked up in their system to confirm that he wasn't actually AU on those accounts anymore).

Data point:
Just got approved for the personal Marriott 80K. In the last 24 months, I have opened 1 personal and 3 Biz from Chase (UA, Marriott Biz, UA Biz, and Ink Plus). Last app was in September 2014. I have also opened another 16 accounts (most have been closed) from other banks (mainly Citi and AMEX) in the last 24 months. This Marriott was auto-approved. I also applied for th Citi AA and that app went into further review mode (I never call). Last app before this mini AOR was on July 28 for the Wyndham Rewards CC (auto-approved).

I think that is more than a fair assumption and one I had made. I think, though, this shows some supporting evidence that the cut off is 5 or more and not more than 5.

With 15 new cards in the last 12 months and no preapproved offers it looks like I won't be getting a CSP anytime soon. Since the annual fee on my Ritz card is due soon, and I just got a new Lounge Club card with an expiration date of 9/30/2016, and the CSP has the same benefits as the Ritz otherwise, I decided to upgrade my Chase Sapphire that I've had for years to a CSP. Called the number on the back of CS and the rep processed it with no issues or question. It already had a $5k credit line so maybe that helped.

Just applied for the chase Marriott card 80k and was not instantly approved with 790 credit score. Called in and talked to specialist for about 5-7 minutes. She came back and told me I was being denied because of too many new accounts in the last 24 months. She specifically quoted my citi and existing chase cards. I currently have 6 chase accounts and about 7 citi accounts. I tried to move existing credit around and close an account and was still denied.
For me it appears that the 5/24 rule is in full force for ALL chase cards.
