Chase retention bonus or fee waiver reports [Archive]

I understand that some card members have had luck threatening to cancel their credit cards with BA Chase and getting up to 10,000 miles. I gave it a try this evening and spoke with a retention specialist.

I said "I am thinking about closing my credit card with BA Chase Visa and getting a Delta Amex card. Do you offer any incentives for me to stay with this credit card." Specialist: "What type of bonus are you looking for?" Me: "I understand you may offer a lower interest rate, waive on the annual fee or additional frequent flyer miles." Specialist "I am sorry sir but we have no such offers." I say "In that case you could please tell me the steps I need to take to cancel my credit card." He says "I can do that for you right now over the phone, would you like me to proceed?" Me, "No thanks."

I think they are on to it but I will give it another try tomorrow evening. Anyone have better luck or a better way of going about it?

I will be cancelling my card, but at the end of the year before the renewal fee is due.

How much have you spent on the card? Retention bonuses aren't always offered if you've only spent the bare minimum. Think about it like this, why would Chase want to keep someone who only charged $2k to get the bonus versus someone who charged $25k over the same period? I've noticed, specifically for Citi, that the more your monthly spending, the sweeter the retention bonuses. I'm not positive this holds true for Chase, I'm just speculating.

Specialist: "What type of bonus are you looking for?"
sounds like they got you pretty good ;p
i don't think it's a good idea to "demand" a bonus or to act like you know they've been handing bonuses out, if the Specialist has a little IQ or bad day they'd turn you down very fast.

I have had the card since 11/2009. I spent around $12,000 in 2009 and over $35,000 in the 2010 calendar year so far. Have not received the companion ticket yet however.

dude its plain as a day.
Don't ask for the bonus.
Say like: I want to close the account because I was not sure how the program worked. I wanted to go to Asia and the way I understand is, when I talked to British Airways, is that I have to spend 15 000 more $ to get to my free ticket, and its just too much for me...

They will say well lets make that goal closer. And given me the miles. It worked every single time with me. Thats why they call it retentions. They calls are recorded, and if their sups catch them offering bonuses just for asking they are out....

If the OP got the card in November, isn't it a little early to be asking for a retention bonus? I've always waited until the annual fee was due before inquiring.

I'm on track for the $30k this CY, any guesses on whether I'll be offered a retention bonus if I call to cancel? For what it's worth, I agree with libuser, I think you've got to just try to cancel and see if they offer anything.

I'm not very good with rejection, I've learned. I once cancelled a card that I wanted to keep, just out of spite because I wasn't offered a retention bonus. When I hung up I was doubly pissed :)

Chase retention bonus reports [All cards]

In a different thread (regarding CITI cards) information is shared about what sort of retention bonuses typically are offered to those who call in to cancel a credit card: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/other...n-bonuses.html

I have not located a similar thread regarding Chase cards (except for a short 2004 thread about a Chase Continental card). I am wondering what some of the typical retention offers are for Chase cards.

(And I’m wondering if anyone has a direct number for reaching a Chase retention specialist. A CITI retention specialist direct phone number is given in the CITI thread.)

My wife's Southwest RR card Annual Fee came up in last statement. We called to cancel the card, Rep initially offered 1000 Reward Dollars (1200 Reward Dollars = 1 Rapid Rewards Credit). We asked for 5000 points, They finally offered 3000 points. With 3000 points and 2 Anniversary RR credits, annual fee is pretty much paid off.

BA Chase retention bonus??

Has anyone tried canceling their BA Chase card by phone yet, and if so, was there any worthwhile retention offer?

I haven't been targeted for any of the bonus offers, like triple miles. I'm wondering if calling to cancel would elicit some sort of offer like that. My account is only about 8 or 9 months old, so I'd have a bit of time to meet some spend requirement if I were appropriately incentivized. :)

Normally I'd keep the card a bit longer in order to generate some mileage activity to re-set the mileage expiration clock.

Based on the original Chase BA 100k bonus thread, it seems like anyone who's called lately didn't get offers of any sort when canceling their card.

2K miles was offered to my wife. Asked for waived annual fee, no dice.

I cancelled my BA card last month and was not offered any retention bonus.

TrueBlueFlyer Oct 2, 2010 11:36 am

I will be cancelling my BA card in two months, keeping it for now as i'm getting the NYC commuter $50 cash back. Pretty cool offer, second one in a few months.

Would be nice to get a retention bonus as I probably could use the BA card in Europe at the end of the year.
