I hope the situation is better now as I had to go the VGC route for the min spend due to this.

@G-CIVC Im hearing mixed reports. I might apply for a second card next week and see how that turns out. I hope they are not manually processing their applications these days.
Has anyone besides Hottub Cowboy attempted (and succeeded) in using this card for CX.com purchases outside of the US? I am wondering whether they still give the 2AM/US$1 for foreign currency transactions, or if that gets recognized as an international purchase (and hence, 1.5AM/US$1). On the Amex CX Elite card, you don't get the HK$3/1AM bonus earn rate unless it is settled in HKD (ie., if using CX.com you have to be flying out of HKG).

T&C just says 2AM for every US$1, so in theory sounds like should be 2AM/US$1. But interested if anyone has empirical evidence...

It is a Visa card after all. It simply does not make sense.

It seems like it (manual processing) is the case.
Spent close to an hour getting bounced around between a lot of incompetents, the most intelligent of whom told me she would connect me to a financial analyst who could resolve my application. The so-called financial analyst simply confirmed my phone number with a code, and then informed me that a specialist would look at the application in ...(you guessed it) seven to ten working days. Felt I had taken a time machine back to the 1980s.

It will be 2AM/US$1 for sure with CX.com purchase. Otherwise, people will be pissed

For sure - there will be no double dipping (CX+international).

I too suspect that Synchrony might have been the issue. I have had issues using my Singapore SIA Amex cards on the Cathay site so it wouldn't surprise me if the issue was with Cathay. I checked with Synchrony and was informed that no attempts to charge the card were showing up on my account. This was a few months ago right after the card launched so I hope this is all ironed out by now. I just applied for my second card last night (purely for the bonus) and it went into manual processing.

@calf613 Note that I had these issues when the card first launched. I applied for it on Day 1 so I am sure Cathay should have sorted things out by now. I recommend using Amex Plat for all airline ticket purchases as x5 MR points are far more valuable and can be converted to AM anytime.

Like larrythai, I called about application status and was bounced to 7-8 different CSRs, each in a different department. The last one wanted to send a text to the phone number on my app, which is a landline. I offered my cell number, but the CSR said my cell number didn't pass whatever test he put it to. I asked why and he said it was probably either a new number or a different address. My number is 8 years old and I moved here before that.

We have a few accounts with Synchrony and this is very typical-hard to believe a medium sized national bank is so incompetent in its customer facing ops.

I was told app approval or denial will be in 7-10 days. Today is day 6-we'll see what pops out.

Ugh, I hadn't anticipated potential issues with getting a card approved and issued. I haven't applied yet, but am planning to apply for cards for myself and my wife. Hoping to build Asia Miles to redeem on QF for a trip from LAX-SYD next fall (November 2018). Thought I was clever, but didn't plan on it being issue to even get the card. Oh well, we'll see how it goes!

i.e. me: HKG-SYD-HKG in Y --> HKG-SYD J SYD-HKG Y --> (after arrival in Aus) SYD-HKG J
mate: HKG-SYD-HKG in PE --> HKG-SYD J SYD-HKG PE --> (six hours before departure) SYD-HKG J
Percy, does this late potential upgrading work on partner flights as well (e.g., QF)? I won't even dream of LAX-SYD in J, but I'd like to do it in PE if possible. I fear availability will be tough (family of 4), but I'll have enough miles. Can I book Y and then upgrade to PE last minute by paying the extra miles if availability opens up? Or does this only work on CX flights?

Not QF. I can't speak for all partners but I don't observe this last minute release on QF (I was monitoring for HKG-SYD and SYD-HKG last weekend)

Congrats. Did you have any contact with the bank, or was it approved by itself?

Yesterday I called, and after speaking with only two reps, I found out I had been approved. Great, considering I want to make a couple of short hops next time I'm in Asia (probably December).

Out of curiosity, what was the phone number you called? I looked all over the website and could not find a phone number. I did not even receive an email after I applied...

Looks like we don't have many DP. Shoot.
There's a visa signature and visa card. I never got the phone number to find out about my approval progress.

Note:
This 50,000-mile offer is available through 10/31/2017.

Question:
Has this card had a 50,000-mile offer in the past? It's usually just 25,000 miles. (I can't apply by 10/31/2017...so I'm wondering if the 50,000-mile offer might return next year.)
