We recommend you decline the car rental company's additional excess insurance at time of rent. This product is NOT an insurance but an additional service provided by AUTO EUROPE LLC, USA which is determined within reason at the company's discretion."

"Excess claim procedure:
Please contact Auto Europe to start your claim with our customer service team within 90 days of the incident. You can contact us by telephone or via email at [email protected], please include your Auto Europe voucher number in the subject line. The Excess Refund form will need to be provided with all details of the incident and signed by the renter. This form can either be downloaded from our website or can be provided by contacting Auto Europe. Other documents will also need to be provided: credit card statement showing the car rental company's charge, signed rental agreement, final invoice, check-in/check-out forms, accident/damage report, repair bill/estimation, police report, photographs and details of the all involved parties. If you are not able to provide us with these documents, Auto Europe will request these from the local supplier. Please note, failure to provide these documents could delay the process by up to 8 weeks.
As soon as your claim has been finalized and a determination has been made by Auto Europe, you will be contacted with the outcome in writing by email."

I'm sure only complainers comments are published

But have you heard of satisfactory outcomes of Auto Europe Excess Cover claims?
Technically no car rental provides insurance they provide a legal waiver for damage. From one of my upcoming rentals:

Car hire companies do not offer insurance, they offer waivers. This is an important difference because many renters are under the illusion that they are purchasing insurance that will cover them for anything and everything including all wrong-doings.

Please note that waivers differ between car hire companies so please ask the rental agent to explain in detail what you are covered for and always read the Rental Agreement terms and conditions.

The actual rental company provides the insurance, usually with an excess, not Autoeurope. If you want to waive the excess autoeurope offers their own excess waiver refund, I have not used it so i have no data on how good/bad it is compared to the excess waivers the car rental companies sell when picking up the vehicle.

However my point was not that autoeurope was a good/bad service but you can save lots of money by merely changing the country website on sites like autoeurope. Hong Kong is always one of the most expensive to use. There is not one always cheaper site, it varies depending on when/where I want to rent for. This has no bearing on the rental as its necessary to state on all the sites your country of residence when booking (different to the country website)

Its hard to know which companies are better or worse as only the complaints surface online, however it is the individual car hire companies you want to investigate. For instance certain cities Spain has had many issues with car rental excess scams over the years.

My strategy is to rent through Autoeurope with a low/zero excess and then possibly purchase Tire/windows coverage through the rental company. I always take many photos of the car before and after renting infront of the agent (so they see i have evidence) to discourage any false excess claims

But this year they wouldn't renew my policy as the insurers had changed their terms so that they now cover everyone in the world except residents of China, Hong Kong and Macau! (I wonder why? Perhaps we can guess!)
I spoke with an insurance agent about this a few months ago. He did not know of any product available in Hong Kong that did this.

Yes but the lowest damage waiver I can get was C$32/day on a C$35/day rental.

Otherwise (from my Thrifty Canada rental confirmation):

"If the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is declined, customers may be responsible for any loss or damage to the rental vehicle regardless of fault. Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) is NOT offered in Canada."

I've driven cars with that appear to be insured with very large excesses. But Thrifty Canada appears to be telling me that there is no insurance on my rental.

That's a crazy price; it was this situation that made me try booking through different country website. I think because so many Americans& Canadians can get rental insurance through their credit card, car rental companies charge a huge amount for the waivers. Assuming your booking is refundable without penalty did you price it through a UK website?

Too bad, I finished my rental already, without incident.

There were some parts in the rental near ski zones where I was skidding. I slowed to a crawl and muttered "boy I'm glad to have to LDW now"

I don't think I saw this Tax Payment offer shown here. Pay with Citibank Visa before 31 December and get up to $400 in supermarket coupons:

https://www.citibank.com.hk/english/...CU2LENCCCTCB02

Any other decent tax payment offers for Citi or SCB?

SCB is targeted
BEA has 0.25% https://www.hkbea.com/html/en/bea-cr...onlinetax.html

There are certain CCB and HSBC tax payment offers that are better than BEA, but you will receive those in the mail (or in CCB's case perhaps email too).

The HSBC RC tax incentive caps out at a HKD 25,000 payment, I think? Is there any chance that ceiling might be raised?

Correct. Spend between 8,000-8,333.33 best

The missus got it too. Quite good.
In fact it can overlap with the wow-winter promo above.

Cos simple multiplier promos end in abnormal, abuse and misuse.
HSBC Red Hot Winter offers 6% on restaurants/online/Apple Pay and 3% on other local spending. Do I need to spend $8k or $16k to enjoy both promotion?

8K just for the 6% online/Apple Pay

I heard some claims the 3% non-online/Apple Pay promo plays separately but I don't want to check it out.
