first time ever they run promotion for J class travel to PVG/TPE...can see how challenging their current load is...

Earn miles and more miles with Cathay Pacific Business Class to Shanghai or Taipei
Earn miles and more miles with Dragonair Business Class to Shanghai or Taipei
  • travel within Jan 16 - Mar 31, 2009
  • for HKG and Macau residents
  • book on cathaypacific.com or dragonair.com
  • double miles for each flight in J to PVG or TPE
  • if 2 roundtrips completed within the promotion period, +2500 bonus miles; 3 = +5000; 4 = +10000 (max)

CX needs to do much better than this pathetic promotion in order to entice people away from the competiton. I know they are bleeding like hell on these two routes, espeically in J becasue many business people now fly Y instead of J or other carriers given the outrageous prices CX charges. But this is hardly enough, a most certainly futile effort.

This promotion is useless cause it's only restricted to the residents in Hong Kong or Macau. China Airlines' promotion for the Taiwanese working along with the government vouchers beats it like no tomorrow.

China Airlines (CI)
Government Voucher NT$3,600 + airport tax/fees/fuel surcharges
Any short haul destinations from TPE or KHH
14 days economy ticket validity, no mileage accural, no upgrades
Travel valid from Feb. 6 to Sept. 30, 2009, no changes allowed after ticket issued
100 offers per day from Jan. 18 to Jan. 31, 2009

Technically one can pay just the airport tax/fees/fuel surcharges for a round trip ticket to not just Shanghai Pudong, but also Guam, Delhi, Tokyo, and Denpasar.

and, frankly, if it's the companies' policy not to pay for J...I wonder if this promotion is effective enough to get individual travelers to pay for the J - Y (or J -discounted Y) fare difference themselves...

Cathay sent a web link with the mail so I guess the eligible participants are limited.
