CX Y fares - can some one explain.

I am QF WP but there are some CX flights from ADL to HKG that would beconvenient. Only true Y fares count full points for status though so I want true Y fares.

Now QF offers Y fares at about $AU 2000 return for this but CX's Y fares start at about $AU 6500.

Is there any trick or some thing I am missing? The CX short hall Y fares like HKG PVG etc are reasonably priced but not these.

Can I call on the vast CX knowlege base here for an explanation?

for cx points for status (i believe you're talking about club miles/sectors), Y class is not the only one that counts. B, H, K, M, L, V fares for economy also count (100%) towards clubs miles/sectors. those tickets would probably be at a much lower price.

not sure about QF though.

Thanks b-kpf,

I wish the lower ecenomy fairs did count 100% for status. Maybe they do for Marco Polo but QF shows CX Y as the only CX economy fair that has 100% status points earn.

If any one has actual experience on non Y economy getting 100% status earn on QF I'd be interested to know.

From the QF website

Cathay Pacific Airways (CX), including Cathay Pacific Airways' affiliate Dragon Air (KA)

BHKLMV Discount Economy 0.5
Y Economy 1.0

On international flights even on QF metal / tickets only full Y (or T/W - premium economy) gets full economy points.

Happy wandering

Correct that on QF only full Y fare gets full status points, but discount QF fares get full mileage, but reduced status points.

by the way, when I tried the QF website, the $2000 fare ADL-HKG is considered a Flexi Saver fare which is a Discount Economy fare for status points earning.

You can not buy Y fares of Qantas website as far as I know.

The $AU2000 is a published Y fare.

Hi lucky_Man

The AUD2000 fare you have for Qantas is NOT a full Y fare. The full Y fare will be much more expensive, in line with the cathay fare. Any fare around the AUD2000 level will certainly be a very high economy class fare, likely something in the B or H bucket, but it won't be Y!

You are correct that only Y fares earn the full status credits, but a better value for money option would be to fly in discounted business class! (depending on the time of year business class using QF or CX will likely be cheaper than a full Y ticket).

Welcome to FT and perhaps come join us over at the Qantas board where the best advice on earning for the QFFF can be found.

Hi LHR/MEL/Europe FF,

Maybe I can teach some people some thing on this forum. The $2046 fare is Y class - I have booked them and used them. They show Y and the upgrades points are 25,000 not 40,000 for HK flight.

I fully understand that Y is not equal to economy.

Even with in a class like Y they have different prices. The $6160 Y on QF is "YRT" and the 2046 fare is "YLFFA1". Both Y. The main difference in the rules I can see is that YLFFA1 booking must be all QF or combined only with CX,KA,CZ,FM and a few other Chinese airlines.

The only time I ended up with H being sold to me as Y was by an inexperienced operator at a travel agent. With QF direct and travel agents the penelty for going from full flex to Y has been about $150 but it can some times take some explaining.

Maybe it is only QF that offers these but I would be surprised. I think what I am learning is that I might just have to stick with QF and the extra transfer.

Lucky_man my sincere apologies! I didn't for a moment wish to think that you didn't know the difference between a Y and other buckets but rather, as you pointed out, that a sales agent was probably selling you a B or H fare telling you it is Y!

Anyways - my apologies for doubting that a Y class fare can be had for around the $2000 mark - I am travelling to HKG this week and am looking much higher than that just for a regular V class.

Is this a direct fare, or use QF to SIN and then one of the other airlines you mention to HKG? I would be interested in using this fare if I could to Shanghai.

Regards

With a fare code like YLFFA1 it might be a market specific fare (A1 for ADL) and seasonal (L for low); often airlines do this (offer a much lower fare ex-ADL than ex-MEL or SYD) for Y fares, though generally the effect is to make publicly available the same fare level as corp negotiated fares. When I've noticed this kind of pricing it seems to be from 10% of the network (so you have to hunt for the right starting city). Don't CX and SQ have a strong presence in ADL (for it's size) so this might be QF's way to be competitive for business travel (obviously this fare is of no interest for leisure travel). Too bad they dont offer a JLFFA1 (or maybe they do).

LHR/MEL/Europe FF,

Mel HKG return is also $2046 in the same Y class.

I have in the past got a similar fare with a KA flight to Shanghai on the same ticket.

These days I would use a different ticket for the KA flight so I can have mixed classes (fly business on the KA flight). QF and I guess many airlines don't allow you to mix cabin classes when you mix airlines on the one ticket.

As for Mel-pvg - my experience of Syd-Pvg flights is that their is 'standing room only' and it just goes past the time I can spend in a A330 Y cabin without the need to get out and stretch my legs. J is OK but the only time I have been upgraded was on a boxing day. Y was full and J had 5 Pax.

The YFFLA1 mel-pvg return is $2113

I am no expert on routing so here is the coded form. I think it includes Mel-pvg pvg-mel as an option. I enterd PVG in the search but note it has SHA as the code - unless these are city codes rather than airports. Still learning this part.

MEL-SHA
MEL-SYD/MEL-SHA
MEL-SYD/MEL-HKG(KA/MU/HX)SHA
MEL-SYD/MEL-HKG(CX)SHA
MEL-HKG(KA/MU/HX)SHA
MEL-HKG(CX)SHA

You could really clock up some segments if you include Sydney and HKG.

Any way it seems the answer to my question is that I am simply out of luck for getting similar Y class fares with CX.
