For many years CX did serve caviar on both legs (JFK-YVR and YVR-HKG). This is part of the general trend of saving money on catering at CX. I remember having caviar on CX the last time I went to Whistler to ski (JFK-YVR), a couple of years ago.

Actually this is not true.

On 889, they used to serve the Caviar ONLY on the JFK-YVR leg.

For the YVR-HKG leg they DON'T serve any caviar.

However this year they changed it around (prob makes sense to ensure the "Long Haul" pax gets the good stuff and not the cheapskate who only does the JFK-YVR (especially on AAdvantage awards!)

As for the PJs and Amenity kits, I have mixed experience.

I recall they do give them out at BOTH JFK and YVR. However they generally don't offer it again at YVR for pax from JFK (however, I think they will give you another set if you ask. You can always say u soiled yourself or something on the previous leg!)

YVR-JFK. No Caviar, but they SOMETIMES do offer the PJ and Amenity kit for YVR pax. Usually it is an Antipesto plate of seafood and salad that is sub to the Caviar and Balik Salmon.

So it seems the 889 has another advantage compare to 831 and 841 because they serve "Balik" Salmon compare to "Fine" smoked salmon.

Yes, I did JFK-YVR twice in 2006 on AA awards and had caviar both times! Sadly, that is no more.

IMO this is the best Transcon in the US (even better than the QF107/8 - although QF is restricted and u can't purchase it as a standalone segment)

It is a pity they changed it to ex YVR now, which will make me stay up longer to have the Caviar! Life is so hard isn't it?
I hope they don't cancel this flight in the future as I love the timing (so I can cram in a full day at NYC and get back to work in HK on time (some of us unfortuantely do have to work).
If they can make the non stop depart in the evening (lets say 12am or 1am) then it will be the ideal flight. But not sure about curfews/restrictions etc..

Also I find the break at YVR good as u don't have to be sitting in a pressurised tube for 15+ hours and I don't ming waking up at 1-2am NY time as I am a late sleeper anyway.
