Man or lhr - hkg?

I currently want to go from LHR to HKG but there’s no ticket redemption for DEC 22 or 23rd or 24 in Y. I know however though that there’s redemption using AVIOS from MAN to HKG on the 22nd (I have enough miles in BA but not yet enough in Asia Miles, need to transfer from CC). However I prefer to fly out of LHR so I can save a couple hours of commuting to MAN. I know its during Christmas and the chances of an award clearing in J and F is impossible so I’m willing to stick in Y. As an MPO GO, is it likely that Y will open up on these days as we approach departure? Or should I just give up all together and book from MAN to HKG? Also can you wait list an award without the proper amount of miles and then do a last minute transfer from my CC when they confirm a space? Sorry I should probably know these questions as an MPO GO but I usually only fly on award tickets during off-peak seasons.

Anyone with expert flyer wiling to check loads from LHR to HKG on those dates?

IMO, unless F is showing 0 or something really low, you will have a decent chance as long as you monitor it like crazy leading up to departure. CX has a pattern of releasing every seat except of one a couple of days before. So I would say that you have a decent chance

Seens a reasonable chance on 22 Dec, 23 Dec.

You can always set up a waitlist online even if you have insufficient miles.

What's the maximum in cash you're willing or able to pay for this trip? If you must go, and can't pay for a Y fare, my bias is always in favor of taking the sure thing (MAN in this case) instead of hoping for the best.

That said, as a GO your "losses" are limited in this situation provided you're willing to pay cash if that's what it takes to get to HKG. You can ride it out for a while to see if redemption availability opens up ex-LHR and if it hasn't by a few days before departure, you can still use the seat guarantee to get a cheap(er) revenue ticket on your preferred flight. Just make sure you understand exactly when the 72-hour cut-off would be in this case so you don't leave it too late.
