Question Premium Y on CX

Hi all,

I just made a PY redemption on CX from HKG-ORD with my avois points. But when I look at actual cost of the ticket, it cost as much as 5 times compare to the lowest Economy class! I haven't check other destinations for price, is this normal price for the ticket?

You're comparing revenue PEY to revenue EY? That differential seems a little high, but no so out of whack, especially if you're comparing an ultra-discounted economy ticket (like a fanfare, if one is available for your dates) to a higher-bucket/full fare upgradeable premium economy. It's most noticeable if you're only looking at one-way instead of return.

No It was actually a round-trip flight, and yes I was looking lowest Y class, but even if it is flexible fare it still cost twice as much. Not sure if it is worth the price, I guess I will evaluate this Thursday.

If you're using avios points, redemptions are at a fixed ratio, aka Y = 50k miles, PY = 1.5x Y redemption, 75k miles. J Biz = 2x Y redemption, 100k miles etc.

So from value per avios point view point, since PY costs 2-5X Y, paying only 1.5X avios for PY vs Y redemption is a very good value then right?

PEY can be good or poor value for money.

Sometimes you can get it for 30% more than the cheapest available Y. Infact I've previously booked a changeable-for-free PEY which was only 30% more than a pay-to-change Y.

OTOH if it was multiples of the standard economy price, then I would be flying standard economy. A factor of 5 seems exceptionally large however. Are you sure you got the numbers right?

+1. Definitely double check the math, 5x the points for economy should be landing you in business class.

One Way for Y is 35k and PY is 52.5k. I used the Points + cash option and paid 36.75k + $200 +Fee. I am definitely okay for paying addition $200 + 1750 points for a long-haul flight.

But for flights less then 6 hours I would not have pay the extra, and when paying with cash I wouldn't do it if the price is double the amount of Y class unless it has exceptional service and food.

Okey in this case the discounted PEY fares may have sold out while the discounted normal economy fares are available. In this case PEY would be a poor buy.

In general anybody who pays the full fare for an unconditional ticket in any cabin class is a nutter!

Since you're using points, why do you care about the cash prices?

Cash fares in PEY exHKG or Australia normally have no bargains.

exUSA OTOH PEY fares will be more competitive with Y. And cabin occupancy rates will confirm that I believe. I haven't priced other locations in any detail.

Happy wandering

When premium Eco gets full, the prices can be ugly. I usually end up buying business because the fare difference is too small anyway (CDG or AMS to HKG). On one booking last year the lowest quoted business fare was actually lower than the premium eco fare.

You'll find out for yourself if you find premium worth it or not, personally I believe it's a little better than economy but a whole lot worse than business.
