volunteer for downgrade as an elite?

All these years flying CX as a SL or GO, I've never once been asked if I would be willing to downgrade for an oversold flight (and get compensated). Is it a policy to not ask MPO members if they'd be willing to downgrade?

I ask because my fiancee is at JFK right now waiting for her flight to HKG. She's booked in J (one-way) and was just offered US$8.2k to downgrade to Y+. If I were offered that deal, I'd take it even over an upgrade to F.

Airports in North America are certainly more generous than in HKG or Asia.

A friend's mother was on a ticket from YVR to HKG a few years back. Flight was oversold and she was offered US$500 to take next flight next day and an upgrade to J. She declined. Then CX up'd the offer to US$ 1000 and an upgrade to F class.

And she declined... stating that she wouldn't have time to shop before going on to Singapore 2 days later.

So did your fiancee take the deal?

I have been opuped many times before but not downgraded in years.
(This was before my elite days, flying as a student from YVR-HKG for leisure.)

Quite a lot of discussion & comment here, albeit from a few years back - downgrade offered on HKG-LHR tonight - but consensus there was no they won't look to bump an elite.

I presume the size of the offer ex NY is largely based on the fact the full J fare on that route is so expensive to start with.

I don't think that matters - the downgrade comp in 2008 was calculated on the diff. between the two full-fares on the sector plus a bit more for goodwill. We had flown all the way to Australia from the UK for under HK$30k, yet they would still give $21k back.

I have been offered compensation to downgrade J to Y as a MPC member, never took it though...company had paid the fare and the ethics of it just didn't seem right. Was at an outport, I think either SFO or LAX.

In some of these situations, you might be able to negotiate a particularly good downgraded seat (exit row or blocked empty seat next to you if the flight isn't full).

I’m offered compensation to downgrade a couple of times per year. Most recently was just prior to Christmas on a flight from HKG to AKL - was offered HK$19K to downgrade from J to Y. I declined because I had a meeting to go to upon arrival in AKL. I took up an offer mid last year on MEL-HKG when I was on a redemption ticket in J and got A$3K to downgrade to Y (there was no Y+ on this service). I’m happy to help out as long as the downgrade does not impact my plans upon arrival. I’m always asked pleasantly if I’d be interested and there’s never an issue if I decline.

I'm CX Diamond and was asked to downgrade from J to Y on a flight to Frankfurt. I declined as QRC3288 mentions the company paid and the ethics didn't seem right. It sort of worked out for me anyway - I got upgraded to F at the gate.

Hey guys, she did indeed take the downgrade after much consideration. Yes she was flying full-fare business, albeit one-way.

They downgraded her to a Y+ bulkhead seat with the seat next to her empty. I guess Y+ is still struggling while J continues to packed on this route.

I was offered US$5K a couple of years ago at JFK to downgrade from J to Y. I turned it down. Business was paying and Y was completely full

Kinda curious why they would offer a DM a downgrade first before upgrading at the gate...I would think they would move DMs to the front first before offering them a downgrade.

was it cash on the spot? the problem is ethically / legally do I need to give this cash back to my firm? I'm happy to take a 5k USD for 14 hour flight, provided I have no meeting upon arrival. However I could get fired if the firm found out. DO cx ever send note back to the ticketing department to reissue an invoice of some sort to say 5k was paid on the spot cash?

i guess it can be sensitive area if my secretary/admin department found out...

It does not sound like CX has a policy on soliciting volunteers.

Unless you are told, everything CX provides as a compensation is cash or cash equivalent.

The only voucher CX offers is onboard duty free.
