How CX release unsold seats for miles redemption?

How CX release unsold seats for miles redemption?
Hi FT experts!
I've got 2 set of "on request" with CX AM. (3 persons J class) since last Dec for our summer Vancouver/LA trip. HKG->YVR->LAX->HKG
My buddy over there want to start reserve hotels in LAX by using timeshare, he keeps nagging me about my flight date.
Want to check is the following rumors correct or not, before I decide to plan next step:
1. CX usually will release more unsold seats for redemption 1-2 months before the flight?
2. It's close to zero chance to get more than 2 tickets by AM. (Anyone can confirm it?)
Should I try book few J class with my travel agent and pray for redemption same time?
