Driving in the Dominican Republic

I'm planning a trip with family to Santo Domingo and Bayahibe (no all inclusives at all). I reserved a rental car at the airport. My recollection from living there over 25 years ago was that road signs were inconsistent and directions hard to come by. Has that gotten any better? Any advice (and any experience with a GPS)?

Born and raised there. Lived there in the last year and I can tell you that it has improved a lot. To get from the airport to the city is fairly easy and with the improvements made to "Las Americas" Highway, you can get to the city in 20 minutes. From Santo Domingo to Bayahibe is fairly easy to go too, as there are signals with the right directions to La Romana, and once you reach La Romana, you'll find directions to Bayahibe. Feel free to send me a PM if you need any details.
