Anybody here have the Royal Bank Canadian Plus visa? How many points do you get as a welcome bonus? Besides earning 1 point per dollar spent, what other point-accumulating opportunities does the card offer?
You're very well informed baobab for someone leaving in UK.
The bonus for signing the Royal Bank Visa Canadian Plus is 2500. You will also receive 1500 points each year for the purchase of your first ticket on Canadian. Sometimes (like now unitl the end of April) they reduce the number of miles to claim an award (ex: 15000-->10000, 25000-->20000, off peak UK 40000--> 35000 etc..)
I think that the CIBC-Aeroplan (same cost for a year of membership)offer more choice and bonus (not sure, but i know they've got a dining program) but in the end it's the choice of the airlines- alliance (Air Canada-Star Alliance, Canadian-OneWorld) that must be your first criteria in choosing the credit card.
Christian - I'm in Cambridge, MA (USA)... I left the UK early last year. However, I lived in Canada (Vancouver) for some time, and still have a Royal Bank Visa.
My primary card now is a British Airways (US) visa - BA is by far my favourite airline, but given a choice between the two Canadian carriers, I would choose Air Canada...
I understood what you meant, Christian - I have some English friends who have more trouble with spelling than you do! (And my French is so awful today that I won't even risk using it...)
The only reason I've chosen Canadian as opposed to Air Canada is that Air Canada, in spite of the better service and cleaner planes, DOES NOT fly directly to any Spanish-speaking country in the world and Latin America is where I mostly travel. This might be some kind of discrimination...
no, actually, just a relic of formerly regulated airlines. Europe was split between AC and Canadian Pacific--CPAir got Southern Europe, AC Northern. CP got the South American routes also. Just like in the US---TWA versus PanAm--TWA got the Mediterranean (LIS, MAD, BCN, CDG, MXP, ROM, ATH, TLV, CAI) where PanAM got Northern Europe (specifically Germany)
Just received the Royal Bank Canadian Plus Visa in the mail. My bank manager gave me a $5000 points welcome bonus, as opposed to 2500. Will use this card at stores where AMEX (1.5 points per CAD$1.00 for Platinum card / Gold point accelerator cardholders ) is not accepted. Will dog my Bank of Montreal AirMiles MasterCard.
Boris, i've applied 5 days ago for the VIsa Royal.
How did you manage to get the 5000 pts versus the 2500 ones. I understand that's because you've got a good relation with your branch director or a lot of your financial activities are with Royal BAnk...
Do you think theirs a way for others to tell their branch manager and get the same deal.
By the way i choose the VIsa Royal cause the off peak award schedule on CAnadian. I want to go to Europe with the family (3 people) but never fly for business. So the only way for me to accumulate is through my credit card.... The difference (60000 vs 40000 for a of peak award) is incredible....
You can get the 5000 bonus points by speaking to the bank manager or by asking a stewardess during a Canadian or an American Airlines flight.
